Went to the Ft. Worth gun show yesterday and found a nice 696-1 with original case and all the paperwork. No tools though and I'm not conversant enough with modern Smith's to know what would have come with it. Once I got it home I realized this is the first S&W I've ever bought that didn't have a pinned barrel or a hammer mounted firing pin and don't know too much about them. I assume I can dry fire without fear of damaging gun? Sure not happy about the loud "ping" when I do. Also bought a carved holster that fits it fairly well for $10.00. Anyway, enjoy the pictures:

Nice gun! How much did you have part with for it? The Stag grips really set it off?

That gun is very desirable with S&W aficionados. The price you paid was pretty good. It's strange so many guns of that vintage and older have no box. What the heck did everyone do with their boxes? Throw them away as soon as they got their new gun home, and then stuck the gun in their sock drawer? You can dry fire it without damage. When I do, I like to put a foam ear plug, or part of one, between the firing pin and hammer face. Can you post a pic of the box's end label? Thanks.

That's a beauty. Dry fire, wet fire, cold fire, hot fire. That rascal can take anything you can throw at it. Invest in some snap-caps though, just to be on the safe side. Bye the way, live ammo is what that beauty is craving.

Switch back to the black grips and you have a very nice shooter there.

Very nice I especially love the stag grips. Nice to see other parts of the state still have good gunshows. Haven't been to one since they shut down the saxton one here in Austin and even then there weren't too many nice revolvers there.

Nice package all the way around. I am not a holster guy, but that 1 is cool! And the stags++++++cool! Enjoy it, I know that I would. Bob

Guess I'll have to check out the FW show again. I last went a year ago and didn't really see anything that caught my eye. I was really only there to find some 7.62x54R ammo.

I just don't really care for gun shows any more. They used to be laid back & fun. Now they all seem like Black Friday.

If you got into it at the right price that's a great piece to own. Yeah, the grips look great and the holster is mighty pretty as well. A 44 special is a jim dandy SD gun. If you need more than that to stop a perp then you're hang'n 'round the wrong part of town!
