thanks, les.
those pics are of natayo.
i guess the pic of X didn't get thru.
he/she has a white tummy. the top is light grey with dark grey stripes.
lighter on the face.
there will be no better pics untill natayo is old enow to go outside.
natayo is the runt of the litter, but is the most precosius.
her eyes opened first n she is walking better than her big sibs.
she is adorable, but they all are.

thanks tons, snub. those are way better, especially the first.
by the way, the last pic is X,
i picked those two based on the lighter grey color alone.
the other two are almost black.
my little runt was the only one deserving of the name natayo.

the kits no longer cry when i pick them up. they know they'll have fun.
i put them down outside the box n they explore. they can't go more than a couple of feet but find it interesting.
when i return a kit to the nest, all four riot.
they all get crazy active.
i see paws grabbing at the top of their box as they try to get out.
they are nowhere near strong enow or i'd have to get a box with higher walls.
i can't kitten proof the whole place.
i have some 2' plastic coated chicken wire to wall off the bedrooms, but drifter's litter box is in the hall n she needs free access to that.

DAY 23 REPORT
these guys are starting to look like kittens.
they fight with each other every
time they get active.
natayo climbs her mom, falls off n lands on her back.
as she struggles to turn over, some other kit wanders over her.
this gives her a chance to use all 4 feet to claw at her sib.
i've noticed, her preferred fighting position is on her back, while she tries to disembowel any kit that comes by.
they all fight all the time.
their claws are needle sharp, but they all have very thick coats, so they can't hurt, even tho they try.
mostly, they still sleep n eat, but 3 times/day they get hyper, so i wander over to watch.
mostly, they climb all over mom, tumbling off n wandering away..
every so often someone sticks her head over the box n tries to get out, so i plop down n grab some up. n set them on the carpet.
they are used to this now, so they don't cry when i pick them up.
they really like stumbling around, exploring outside the nest.
they can all walk now, tho natayo is steadiest on her feet.
it's odd that the runt is most advanced.
best walker, best fighter.
she doesn't love me much. she takes after her mom.
ugly cat likes me best, so he's gonna live here forever.

speaking of that bitch that lives here, when i take kits out of the nest, she swipes at me. so far, she hasn't scratched me, so i haven't whacked her.
i'd take a lot from a preg cat, but she's no longer preg.
i have told her, in no uncertain terms, what would happen to her
if she scratches me.
she has never scratched me on purpose, but has cause to know my wrath.
the only reason she has never got whacked is she knows what upsets me n is fast enow to leap for safety before i get her.
anyway the cranky gals that live here manage to coexist with nothing more than mutual hissing n growling.

Glad you and Drifter and the kitties are all doing well. She may not be pregnant any more but she needs extra food and fluids to meet the needs of her body and the kitties she's nursing. If she likes milk you could give her some so the nursing doesn't use up all the calcium from her own bones and she'll stay strong and healthy and so will the kitties. You're doing a great job and you've all come such a long way in a short time.. Hooray for all of you [emoji307][emoji307]

PRISON BREAK
i might have made a mistake. every day, when the kits are rioting i go visit.
i grab some kits out of the nest to play with.
they are too little to play with, but i let them explore while stroking them.
this has given them the taste for the wide open spaces.
this morn, i was watching the big fight when X hoisted himself up n almost over the cardboard wall.
i screamed NONONO ,ran up n grabbed him just in time.
he was making his break right above drifter's water bowl.
he wouldn't drown in 2'' of water, but i don't need a soaked kitten in feburary.
i deposited him back on top of his mom n retired.
in minutes, natayo was at the top of the wall n over.
since she was in no danger i just observed.
she noticed i wasn't on the floor watching her.
she was alone for the first time in her life, so she became afraid.
when crying for mom brot no results., she climbed back in the nest.
this teeniest one is still ahead of the others.

same thing happened this eve. i sat by their box n pulled a couple kits out to play.
no sooner than i got settled, i had 4 kits out.
no one is willing to stay in the box when their sibs get to play outside.
they are all now capable of a prison break.
after they had their exercize, i plopped them on top of their mom, in the box,
once again, natayo jumped the wall.
of course she found out she was alone, so she climbed back in.
this is impressive. the inside is full of sheets n nice soft stuff about 2'' thick, so getting out isn't that hard.
getting back in is much harder.
looks like natayo will survive the plains.

oh, drifter has a full meal every 2 hours.
she gets 1/2 cup milk for calcium every morn, plus 1/2 cup pate to make up for the mice she's not getting. on top of that she gets 2 cups kibble.
this is much more than the 2/3 cup kibble which is her usual ration.
looks like i will ive in the living room for the rest of my life.
i moved the bed in here to be with her during the birthing.
that wrecked my back pretty good.
no way will i move the bed again.

susie:

So glad to see that all is going well!! Glad you are handling and stroking the kits. This is important to their socialization. They will not fear you as they grow up, but bond with you. No feral cats here! And they will still have their hunting instinct. Sounds like you are having a great time with your new friends. Keep up the good work and thanks for keeping us posted.

Best Regards, Les

you know, it took months n months for drifter to decide we were family.
she is still a wild animal that lives with me.
the kits have known my scent since the day they were born.
they have known only loving touches.they even understand i'm watching over them when they explore. they don't get frightened with me there.
if i can't bring out the best in them, then it can't be done.
that said, natayo takes after her mother in being uppity.
X seems to be a cuddle bunny.

4 WEEK KITTEN REPORT.
these guys no longer toddle. they can walk n run.
they go in n out of their box at will.
they come out to run around, but when they tire they go back in their nest
n form a pile of kittens to sleep.
i assume this is instinctive behavior to stay warm in the wild.

it is interesting how inventive these kits are. they can't climb cardboard well, but they can jump up, n get some traction with their back legs until they get their front arm pits hooked over the wall.
once they have armpits [leg pits?] hooked over, they just run their back legs like crazy till they tumble out.
little front claws can't dig in to cardboard but back claws can.

at first, they always came down on their heads, but they are learning to twist in the air, to land somewhat better.
natayo always attacks bear, clawing n biting.
but bear is called bear because he is long haired, unlike his sibs.
he can't be hurt by kitten claws or teeth.

these guys think i'm a big cat. they understand i take care of them, so they romp all over me.
today, bear climbed up my back n got to my shoulder then managed to get onto my head.
i was wearing a cat cap.
they can't climb cardboard but can climb a raggedy sweater.

they are now supplimenting mom's milk.
they ignore kitten food, but will eat mom's friskies n drink water, when not busy falling into the water bowl.
bear can't walk by the water without falling in.
i'm constantly drying him off, but he seems to think that this is a bonding experience.
he loves me.
