MY GARDEN IS PROTECTED !

More news on Roxie.. she got to go to the vet and had bloodwork and urine test and needed fluids for slight dehydration. Turns out she has slight kidney failure very common in older kitties and she also had a urinary tract infection. She was given a long acting antibiotic shot and needs another one on Feb 14[emoji175]. She will get her shots at that next appointment. She never goes out and got behind in her shots but here it is the law that they need at least a rabies shot. We wanted to make sure she was going to recover (and not be euthanized) so we held back on the shot till her recheck visit. My daughter and I are also going to learn how to give her the fluids at home so that we can save her more trips to the vet as much as possible. She's a very strong and feisty cat, so it may be a struggle to give her fluids without the vet helping. About 6 years ago I had a cat who needed the same treatment and I was able to do it for a couple of years. She was a very gentle elderly kitty who would just sit in your lap and let you do the fluids.(requires an IV bag, tubing and a needle to allow about 1- 1/2 oz fluid to drip in slowly thru a needle placed in the scruff of her neck. ) So I know how to do it, but it's hard if the cat struggles and tries to get away or scratches and bites. So wish us luck and we hope to be able to accomplish this for Roxie.
How are drifter and cud doing?. I miss hearing from you and it was hard to find this thread because it's been awhile. Hope things are good. I'll update you about Roxie after her next visit .. She should hopefully be stable for awhile and enjoy the time she has ahead of her. She will be 19 in June and we've had her since she was a tiny kitten and Ali (daughter) got her from a friend at college who brought her to a friend who couldn't keep her at the dorm. So Ali was able to take her and give her a good home at school and she joined my group of 3 kitties when Ali came home from college. So she's our last kitty and we love her. Be well Susie and Les. nice to hear from you but i'm confused.
i thot you had 2 pups but no kits.
does roxie live with you or your daughter?

how were you able to tell roxie was having problems?
what are the signs?

a few months ago i got a notice from the vet that my guys need shots, but that's more than i can do.
i had a minor stroke n now i have little energy.
since it's cold out my guys are mostly inside, anyway.
drifter only spends 4 hours/day outside, but cuddles
spends more like 8 hours outside, probably because his coat is a bit longer than drifter's.

i don't think the hunting is good.
i think they are now living on kibble.
i have no idea how their parents lived
thru winters, but they did.
i suspect there's a die off of feral cats in winter tho.

i don't think drifter lived thru a winter outside.
i think she was born in late winter but managed to move into my house before the next winter.
pretty smart kit.
she didn't really think of that tho.
she bonded with me way before moving in.
once she knew of my good will she wanted my company outside.
she was lonely by herself.
i knew she loved me when she started following me around
even after having been fed.
feral cats are not feral by choice.
when offered a home, they take it.

I'm sorry to hear about your slight stroke. I hope you're feeling better. It's tough to deal with when you have to be careful what you eat. My blood pressure is high and I have to watch it or I'll be getting a stroke too. Runs in my family. Currently we have 2 pups in our house. Logan and Jackson. At one time we had 3 cats: Zz, Cleo and Jake. Then Ali received Roxie when she was a student at college living with friends in an apt off campus. When she finished college, she came home and brought Roxie home so we had 4 cats living in our home and 1 dog at that time. When Ali met Rudy, she moved in with him after awhile and took Roxie with them. At some point since Roxie was lonely, I let Rudy and Ali take Jake to live with them and Roxie. So I had 2 cats and 2 pups at that time and Ali and Rudy had 2 cats. Jake died a couple of years ago and Ali now has only Roxie. I help them pay for medical care because I'm better able to afford it and because I love Roxie too as she lived with me for a number of years and was the kind of kitty who was always " talking" to me which I loved. These 4 cats had incredibly long lives. ZZ was almost 22, Jake was almost 20, Cleo was 18 or 19 and now Roxie is 18 1/2. So that's my four footed fur family tree. Now I'll go back and read the rest of your post and answer that part in a little while.

We knew that Roxie was sick a few months ago when she began to pee next to her box. Since Ali should clean it more, I had her experiment with different litters, different boxes, different food and things the vet recommended. A few weeks ago she started going into her box repeatedly and seeming to be uncomfortable and going in and out. She would meow loudly, in different times during the day and I only knew about this when Ali was ready to tell me. Finally she did and we made an appointment. Ali was afraid that Roxie was really sick and that is why where didn't tell me. She knew I'd want to go to the vet( who in friendly with for over 3 decades and trust her very much. Fortunately it was treatable. Blood testing showed kidney problems.Kidney failure, though slight doesn't go away. But it can be treated with fluids and antibiotics for her urinary tract infection. Ali had to collect urine and bring it in to diagnose the urinary infection. I gotta go get my grand kids. Ttyl[emoji1][emoji1][emoji175][emoji175]

@susieqz I would recommend at least rabies shots for your kits because if they take down an animal with rabies, they'd be exposed to it's blood or saliva most likely. Then you'd have them in your house not knowing and when they got sick unexpectedly they'd not be curable and you're exposed to their saliva and you'd get sick too. Here they give us a 3 year rabies shot for our dogs. I'll find out what they give cats this week when I go. Maybe a friend can help you get there when you're feeling stronger. I wish I lived closer or I'd take them to the vet for you. Any other shots may be optional but a rabies shot can save their lives and yours. ( Let me know if I can pay for the Rabies shots for your kits- it would be my pleasure to help a friend) [emoji175][emoji175])

Ok... Glad they've been ok so far, but do it when you can [emoji175] Rabies is a scary disease. It may not be as prevalent where you are as it is here. I woke up coughing and with a bad headache and slept all day. I cancelled Jackson's vet appt for tomorrow but hope to go with my daughter and Roxie on Friday. Hope you feel stronger every day [emoji192][emoji192]

Happy Valentine's day friends.. I'm still sick in bed with this cough and head cold. Had to put Jackson's vet visit and Roxie's vet visit off a couple of weeks till the 27 and 28 of Feb. My hubby's been taking good care of me and insists I stay in bed [emoji46]... Enjoy Valentine's day everyone [emoji175][emoji175][emoji106][emoji106][emoji1][emoji1]

It's been a while and the world is going crazy lol. How are my friends here doing? I hope you all are well and doing what you can to stay that way. I guess I have to cook now that our restaurants are closed as of 8pm last night [emoji43][emoji2962][emoji33]. Folks here must be eating toilet paper cause there's none left on the shelves [emoji372][emoji372] schools are closed, my kids don't want me to come out to babysit so I have a lot of time on my hands. They even closed the part of the veterinary hospital where Logan gets PT, so I don't take him there for the foreseeable future. I'm calm and well and except for missing actually seeing my friends in real life, I'm doing ok. I'm glad I have dogs and my husband so I can hug someone! Be well friends! Miss you all [emoji175][emoji175] and Happy St Patrick's Day [emoji3515][emoji3515][emoji240]‍🦺[emoji240]‍🦺[emoji74][emoji74]

We just had our first confirmed case here in wv. Governor announced it this evening at 6 pm. In the eastern panhandle. We were the last state to have a case confirmed. My school has transitioned to online, and we have been able to use our offices, but as of tomorrow at 4pm, we can only use them at "our own risk"...!!

I'm trying to see if I can manipulate our schools program "Blackboard", from my iPad. I'll probably still slip in to my office every few days to catch up...I have lots of hygiene and sanitation supplies there, and since no one else will be around, I'll still be "social distancing".

I did eat out today, had to have corn beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's Day.

BTW...This is also St Gertrude's Day... the patron St. of cats!!

I'll bet Susie is in her element...she has been "social distancing" forever!! Me too, living in a cabin in the hills of WV!!

Lucky and Bella say "Hi!".

Keep safe, my friends!!

Best Regards, Les

my kits are well.
high plains drifter is certainly a house cat. she seldom spends more than 8 hours outside.
most of the day she naps or plays.
her feral aspect is really just a hightened fight or flight reflex' lately, she even tolerates my touch.
before, she would come to me only for a brush, now, i lure her with the brush but then switch to stroking her with my hand.
can't pick her up or take liberties, but we progress.

cuddles is the athelete of the family.
he's twice as big as drifter n jumps from the 6' high fence, landing 6' away, staying on his feet.

he spends most of the day outside, but shouts at me when he wants to
come in. that's 6 times/day, but he just visits.
he knows this is home.

he worries me in bad weather.
when it rains, i shout n drifter zooms in, but cuddles hides under the truck or in drifter's old den.

he thinks he is abused tho.
if it's raining n he wants to go out, i refuse.
he shouts at me, i shout back.
i win because i'm bigger but he sure doesn't like it.

i feel a debt of gratitude to these kits.
they have improved the life of this hermit.
so, i've made arrangement for their care if i die.
