My guide rod broke

Today was only the second day shooting my 9ve and the guide rod broke. I've only shot about 200 rounds and 50 of them were today. I called the dealer that I bought it from immediately and they said to bring it in during the week and they will send it to S&W to get it fixed, so I'm going to go up there first thing tomorrow. Im kind of disappointed, but I do understand that new things can break too.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I agree!

It would certainly be cheaper and faster just to send a new guide rod.

Sorry to here about this failure. It is the first guide rod failure that I have heard of. It will be good as new in no time.

Are we missing something here? What caused the rod to break? Might be a reason to send it back rather than change the part and hope everything is cool. Just a thought. After all it is a new gun, and doubt you want to have a recurring issue with this. Kyle
 
I agree too. It needs to go in and get looked at. I've never heard of a rod breaking before. BTW smith paids for everything to have the gun fixed. Shipping including. And to get a rod under warrenty, I don't think they will send you one for free.
 
S&W will probably want to examine the rod/pistol to see why it failed. Problem with the rod itself, other part of the pistol, etc. If the rod, was it a materials issue, problem with the process settings, problem with a certain core in the mold...
 
After rethinking it, I'm in too.

Something more serious could have caused the rod to break; probably just a defective rod though. Should be looked at.

Smith will make it right.

I was thinking about calling them and seeing if I could buy a new rod, but after a little bit more though, I'm just going to send it to them. The spring inside is keeping me from field stripping it or pulling the slide back, so I'm definitely sending it in.
 
It would be best to send it in as mentioned above (I would). I've never seen or heard of a rod break not even the plastic ones used in Beretta or Glock, but there's always a first.:eek:
 
This is just wild brainstorming, but:

Is it possible for the base of the rod to jump out of place, maybe onto that little ridge, while shooting the gun? I don't see how, but if it somehow did, it wouldn't be a good thing. Just a wild thought.

I'm thinking it was there to begin with.
 
Were you able to slide it back far enough to make sure the chamber is empty?
 
Ok, I went up to Shooters as soon as they opened this morning. Their gunsmith took a look at it and cut the guide rod spring to get the gun apart. He checked everything over and replaced the guide rod and spring for me right then and there and told me I was good to go. So, I didnt have to send it to S&W, but if it happens again I will. Thanks for all the input :D
