I passed this one on to him but maybe should not have. He left it with me last night to spiff it up which didn't take much. Looks like it had a dozen 44 specials through it. The gun is from~1973 but the stocks were stamped 11 80 and a little beat up. I put these better stocks on it and there you have it. Not bad for a grand!

He says it was $950. Turns out it has a loose sight insert. Now it's mine for what he paid for it and tomorrow it goes to S&W, (Performance Center, because of age) for a new front sight blade. Turn around time: 6 months. No problem, as I can wait. I'd rather send it to Springfield than have some body around here do it in 10 months with bad results.

Action is like a new gun.
 
Imo alot easier to carefully push the insert over slightly and carefully dab some superglue on the blade.
If the blade is integral with the ramp they will simply replace the insert , sometimes they are seperate with a pin that's polished flush.

I'll second that idea!
You can get little pipettes for extremely fine control of "superglue". If you use the thin viscosity glue, it'll wick into the crevices. Even if you globbed on too much, you have about a minute to easily wipe off the excess. Just use a rag with rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits. None of this poses any risk to the bluing.

There are also sight insert kits (through Brownell's and others) that allow you to make your own new insert. Easy enough for even a child to do.

With the sheer incompetence running rampant, I don't trust shippers at all. And, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that someone at the factory wouldn't mess something up.
 
I know I'm taking a chance with likely less experienced workers at the factory compared to days gone by. My buddy brought over a couple insulin syringes for the super glue method but there is inherent risk involved both ways and I decided to go with a factory repair. They said they replace the sight blade with the insert already in place, like they sell replacement parts. The blueing on the original blade was scuffed up a bit so this should help cosmetically. Of course I will report upon the return of my 29-2, in 6 months, or so. Wish me luck.

Dropped off at FedEx for express delivery. We shall see.

LOVE the 29s!! I still have one Mod. 29-2 in my collection.....A 4" nickel, bought new in mid-1975. Last fired in the 80s. Replaced factory grips right after purchase (still have them, though) for a pair of Jay Scott "toilet seat" Pearl-lites (smooth vs. checkered, and easier for me to grip.) Quit the No. Va. shows awhile back.....admission too pricey, most "goodies" far too pricey, and too much "flea market" stuff. Any time you find a 29-anything for a decent price, that will really "make your day"!

Nice score. I love my 4 inch 29-2 as well as the 4 inch M57 a no dash. I never seem to run into deals such as yours, congratulations.
