I have had several of these over the years. Some I shot, some I did not. Some were Lew Horton, some were not. Some with boxes, some not. Some with letters, some not. Different dash numbers too. Fooled around and sold or traded each one. Was not looking for this one, it kinda found me. Don't need it. Won't shoot it, as my old hands can't stand the recoil any more. But I bought it anyway. That's what we do, isn't? No box or letter with this one, just a plain old 629-1. And this one, I'm KEEPING. So here are the photos. Thanks guys for listening to this rambling old man. Take care.
Roger.

Put some rubber grips on it, get some 44 Special level loads and you'll be good for the range. That's what I do for my arthritic hands.

I've got a good set of S&W logo rubber grips in my grip box, and the seller gave e box of 44 specials with the gun. Outdoor range not far from here. Warm weather I might try it. Thanks!

Congrats on finding such a sweetheart of a gun. I'm not the recoil junky I used to be either but still shoot (toned down) 44 mag almost exclusively. As mentioned above, the 3"er is more of a 44 spl gun in my book. Much more manageable. I've enjoyed mine and am sure you will too.

My 3" is also pretty much shot exclusively with 44 Special. I still shoot midrange magnums in my 4-inchers but post surgery I just can't handle serious recoil anymore. Very nice "-1", OP!

I totally understand. I am down to my last two 3" 629-1s. Both LH's, one with box and goodies. I'd buy another if we crossed paths, especially if it had the original combats. Like the 2.5" 19/66, they just have a certain allure.

Congrats! Beautiful 629 there. Anymore the 3" revolvers are my favorite.

My 3" 686+ is my most often carried by a long shot when I leave home. I have a 3" GP100 in .44 Spl that's a huge favorite also. It's an ideal barrel length IMHO.

My only .44 Mag is a 629-3 Mtn Gun that has seen ALOT of holster carry and use in the 26 yrs I've had it and is one of my favorites. If I saw a 3" like you have there I'd jump on it in a second.

Nice looking revolver. Grips looks great.

I got the 629-1 2.5" barrel version with Hogue rubber grips and keep the mid range ammo around 1000fps or less to help mitigate the recoil.

I owned a 3" 629-4 Backpacker before selling it here on the forum last year.
I shot light and medium loads in 44 magnum cases and not 44 specials.
#1 240gr LSWC over 5.0gr Bullseye,44mag case,CCI LPP(light)
#2 240gr LSWC over 8.5gr Unique,44mag case,CCI LPP(medium)
