On this forum, we are always in agreement about the tendency for liberals to repeatedly attempt to infringe upon our constitutional right to own and to legally carry firearms. But this message needs to get out to the folks, to the "politically unwashed" of our towns and cities. Preaching to the choir on this forum can only get us so far.
Yes, contributing and joining the NRA (and other similar organizations) is a great step in the right direction. However, your letter to your editor in YOUR local newspaper can reach a lot of folks who might otherwise be swayed by some newly-proposed gun legislation.
Here is my letter. It isn't great, but it speaks to the problem.
From recent news, we have seen the terrible violence that several armed individuals are able to perform. I speak of the 13 murders of innocent civilians by the armed and deranged Vietnamese individual in Binghamton, N.Y., who had recently lost his job, and also of the recent planned setup and intentional murder of three police officers in California. I speak of the intentional stabbing of two 80-year-old people in an Orlando Target parking lot last week.
There are already multiple laws on the books that forbid what happened. Criminals ARE criminals BECAUSE they choose not to obey our laws. Further restrictions against honest citizens and their right to own and to legally carry firearms will not prevent the criminal from carrying his firearms.
Think of it this way: Would more laws against “drinking and driving” prevent drunks from getting on the road and killing innocent people?
Please note the following statement by Thomas Jefferson, which specifically addressed this situation:
“Laws that forbid the carrying of firearms, disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted, and better for the assailants. They serve rather to encourage, than to prevent homicides. For an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
