Came to work today and my Co-worker gave me my barrel back. The threads are perfect and he even re blued the threads! (now that's particular!) :)

Photos will be posted as soon as I get home from work and reassemble.

brett that lip on then end of the threads is why i put the 11 degree taget crown on them, and to get rid of the machining radious on the inside of the barrel so there is rifling all the way to the end of the barrel... looks great and great photos

Brett,

Thanks for the props! :) Yeah we looked at it and figured there would be enough meat left at the end of the factory crown after it was threaded so I didn't have him re turn the end down flat. If I was going to use a crush washer I would have that end flat on the rifling. I used a peel washer and didn't have to put any pressure on the birdcage to index so we left it as is.

I will let you know how it performs this weekend, I am going to the range on Sunday for some much needed stress relief! :)

*edit* ohh yeah.. By the way, I figured out why they are called Peel Washers.... It's not because you peel the layers off the washer, it's because the washer peels the layers of flesh off your fingers! :D

i really wasnt refering to the relief on the rear of your threads but the rim that is left on the muzzle, look at ur 2nd pic on the end of the barrel. its very thin and very easily damaged, and the factory leaves a radius\angle leading into the rifling, by removing it you come up with rifling that has control of the round till the end of the barrel. ask any target shooter how inportant a crown is... it not wrong.. its just different than i do them.. i figure while i got the barrel setup i might as well get all i can get out of it .. but loks like he did you a good job

Nice set up Brett. I'm looking forward to your video on handguard & barrel removal. Then I won't be able to resist & I'll have to get Belt-Fed to machine my barrel !! :)

Brett,

I thought you wanted a radii leading into the rifling? That's all on me, I must have misinterpreted your info because I printed the info you sent me. I'm no good without a blueprint and I couldn't find photos of other barrels so we just went this route.

I agree with the lip around the outer edge. It could be damaged easily if you tightened something against it (I could see it flaring out under that circumstance). I knew before hand I was using a peel washer and would time the birdcage so that it didn't require any torque to get it where it needed to be and the bird cage isn't pushing against it.

He could have easily machined that flat but I didn't tell him to do it and he's not a gunsmith per se.

I appreciate the info though! I can always pull it back out and have it chucked up again.

Thanks!

Topsportsman,

I will shot a video on Saturday and get it uploaded.

LOL!

Awesome looking rifle. How much does it weigh outfitted with the suppressor and all?

Phil,

Too much! The supressor is just for the photos... it will not be on the rifle :)

Even without that massive hunk of alloy on the front, it's still hefty with the scope and the bipod on.

Contender,

I will let you know after the range this weekend, so far I like it!

That is a nice looking setup, and the barrel threading was a first rate job. When I bought my first M&P15-22 I thought it looked incomplete without a flash suppressor. These are such great rifles though I just sold my early version to a friend who wanted it badly, and I bought one with the factory installed FS. S&W keeps cranking out new and interesting versions. The MOE model is out this month.

And if you can get the MOE for a few more bucks than what we've been paying for the non MOE's then it's a bargain because to outfit one with the MOE accessories it's going to cost a couple hundred dollars.

These rifles are hot.... Look at all the serial number ranges we've seen here on the forums to date!
