My Model 10 help

I'm looking for info on my uncles model 10-5 he carried as a township marshal in the early 70's. It's a 10-5 6" barrel 38 S&W special fixed site revolver. The serial number is D610xx. I would also like to know if there would be a reason this gun would not have a hammer block installed. I popped off the side plate to check for rust and it was missing. The plate has been machined for one but it was not inside when I inspected it.

Maybe Austin Behlert got his hands on the gun - he used to remove hammer blocks.

I don't think my uncle would have had him do that. I doubt he knew who Austin Behlert was. I do, but not my uncle.

The short answer is that it was removed.
I have heard of PPC shooters removing the hammer block and bolt spring to reduce friction by a minuscule amount, but that does not seem the case here. Maybe he heard of the practice and thought it a good idea.

I would strongly suggest getting a new hammer block asap. They were installed for a good reason and quite honestly you won't know or feel any difference in the action. they should be widely available and not expensive.

I also have a Model 10-5 6". For an accuracy load use 146 gr full wadcutters at about 650fps (3.2 gr Bullseye). I also like Lyman 158 gr SWC and Lee 146gr SWC/HP (same external dimensions) at 700-725fps, this Non +P load is extremely accurate and puts an end to any problem!

I did get a replacement. Tried to install it but it was binding the trigger. I have to take a closer look to see if there are any burrs. I got it off of ebay. Gave the vendor a description of my smith and he said it would fit.

I don't remember when they changed the dimensions. I think 1980s but there are better sources of parts. Try Jack First Gun Parts. or Numrich Arms

Any idea of the date of manufacture of my revolver? It would be a big help.

If it is really D plus only five digits, it would be from 1968.
