My new 45 yr. old BHP

Browsing my LGS a few weeks ago. The Mrs. spotted this in the used case, reminded me we had discussed getting a 9 MM for our use. She really has good taste. I always liked BHP's but had despaired of getting a clean, made, assembled and finished in Belgium example. Original box, mags (2) and grips. Doesn't look to have been fired much. I've put about 300 rnds. through it. Runs perfect. Had to brag.

Maybe I should have been more clear. It's mine, not hers. She saw it first but I bought it. She's a Detective Special type gal.

Congratulations! I'd brag too! So, is that a pre T-series, or a post C-series that has had the hammer replaced?

It looks like a 69C, a transitional year from the T series to the C series. Very special, I still want one someday.

All-time Classic

I have a mid-70s vintage Hi-Power with factory adjustable sights. Great gun, super reliable and carries more easily than a .45 ACP in an IWB holster.

Unfortunately, us New Yorkers can't be trusted with high capacity magazines so I had to go out and buy ten-rounders. This gun will always be with me and I'm planning to take it to the afterlife, along with my 3" S&W Model 65, RB.

All I know about a BHP is I had a chance to buy one in the early 70's, NIB for $125 and I passed on it, (mumble, gripe, curse).

Pretty much the same with me. I seem to remember in 1969 or 1970, the retail price on a brand new Hi-Power at the gun store near where I was stationed for a while was $112. On my salary at the time, that was kind of high. But Old Model Ruger Blackhawk .357s were going for $78. I bought the Ruger.

That was the deal with me, too. I was looking at a BHP and a Colt 1911 in 38 Super, $125 each. Had enough $$$ for one and bought the Colt. Never been sorry about the 1911, still have it and like it fine. But I should've went out on a limb and bought both. Hindsight's 20/20.

Got it, now. I misremembered the location of the serial number on the T's (thought it was on the frontstrap like the C's), and couldn't quite see the 69C in the photos. It's a beauty! In a similar vein, I saw a picture in a book of military handguns that showed a T-series with the spur hammer. And my 76C has the red wash on the back of the grips that was supposedly discontinued in 1970!

Never met anyone who didn't like the feel of a Browning HP in their hand..... always surprised me that there aren't more around.......

as far back as I can remember it was/is rare to see one in the "New" or "Used" gun case at a LGS.........the only time they seemed to be readily available was a small window after the Mark III came out.

While I rarely carry a HP....... I think I will always have one.

About two years ago I had the chance to buy a "94" Mark lll like new from a guy who needed cash. Picked it up for $250, including a leather Desantis paddle holster w/retention strap, and a box of 50 target rounds. Mine till I die.
