After I finally got my 629-5 the way I wanted it and carried it for a few months I've decided that it's the perfect physical size for OWB carry on my property as well as often times around town (rural area) and I love how it feels in my hand.

Here is my beloved -5 which I hope to never have to part with.

However a few times I have felt that if it were just a bit lighter in weight that it would of course be more comfortable. I started looking at the 329PDs and although very nice just didn't tickle my fancy. I wanted to stick with 44 Mag so started searching for a lighter weight option (if possible) while still retaining a 4" barrel. This led me to the mountain gun variant. I looked at a few and happen across this one.

A 629-3 from the early 90s. Everything checked out well and although it has a few very minor wear areas it is mechanically perfect as far as I can tell. Seeing as I planned to carry it I didn't expect it to be physically perfect. The weight difference between it and my -5 seemed significant in hand and I really liked it so it came home with me.

Now I have taken it apart and thoroughly scrubbed it down then applied some rennwax and threw some new stocks on it..... I'm considering a gold bead front sight but I am going to practice with it a bit as is first to see how accurate I am with it. So far I'm very pleased though. Just wanted to share some pics for the MG fans!

That's a nice one alright. Gorgeous combats too. You might wanna put the rubbers back on for the range though. I got my first Mtn Gun recently (a dash 4) and I saw real quick why you see so many that are ported. That skinny barrel smarts mister! I decided to dedicate mine to a diet of 44 specials.:D Congrats on your new gun.

The difference between a mg and a standard 4" 629 is 2 ozs.
Since its all off the front, you really feel it on the back end.
Nice sixgun you got there.
Enjoy it

I have a 44 special loading that moves out a 240 grainer right around 980fps which I like to carry often. I'd say it'll be more than enough unless I plan on going into black bear territory which I sometimes do then I'll put some magnums in it.

I love the versatility of the 44 magnum.

Thanks for the compliments gents!

Love the black powder bevel on the front of the cylinder of the Mountain Gun/Revolver.

Mine is a 629-2 and was called the Mountain Revolver, later they went to Mountain Gun.

Overall, I consider them to be about the best looking S&W's.

The black powder bevel is also one of my favorite features. Makes reholstering smoother and also is a bit easier on the insides of my Mitch Rosen leather holster.

Sometimes the tapered barrel doesn't look correctly proportioned to the rest of the gun in photos but man in person it's a real beauty and also my favorite look on a 4 Incher.

Very nice 4"ers !
IIRC the MG cylinder cut is referred to as "Chamfered"

Well you weren't kidding about the recoil with hot 44 Mags. I fired some 300 grain Hornadys out of it and compared to my 4" standard lug 629 I bet this thing recoils aa good 40% more. Much snappier with that lighter barrel.

240 grain Specials felt just right though!

I've had a 629-4 Mtn Gun for over 20 years. I estimate that I have poured over 30,000 rounds thru it by now with nary a malfunction. Favorite load with this gun is my standard load in all my 629's of 8.6g of Green Dot and a 429421 250g cast boolit.
Good luck with yours it's a nice piece!
