A couple weeks ago I saw a post about Mod. 520's and remembered that a local shop had one. After learning how scarce they are I went up there and put it on layaway before somebody else figured out what it was and bought it. I brought it home today. She sure is nice! I got a box for it from another member here. The grips don't match, but I could tell when I removed them that it was the first time off for them. So it's true that a lot of these didn't match.

Those are one of very few fix sighted guns that I would own, Another would be a blued 58.;)

You know guys, the more I handle this thing, the more I like it!:) It is the only large frame fixed sight revolver I have. I have a lot of J frame fixed sight guns, but this one is cool! I didn't think I would like it, but I bought it because it is so scarce. I think I changed my mind!:D

Nice revolver, I try to do a search on the model 520 but came up with nothing, in your post you said they are scarce, can you or anyone tell me some more about the gun, and a price range they seem to run in. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum, Marshbrook.

The M520 is basically a fixed sight M28 Highway Patrolman. These for built for the New York State Police, in a run of about 3000, IIRC. Before the NYSP took delivery, however, S&W brought out the L frame revolvers and the New Yorkers decided on them instead of the M520s.

These were placed on the market and didn't sell well at all. Of course, now they are very desirable. :D

Well Marshbrook, what little I know about them, 3,000 were made for the New York State Police in 1980. The NYSP cancelled the order and bought Mod. 28's instead because they couldn't wait. S&W decided to build them anyway and sold them to the public.

I actually traded a 6" 28-2 for mine (and a little boot). I would also like to know more about their price these days.

Woops! Muley Gil is probably right!

Marshbrook-- approx. 3000 mfg. in about 1980 for the New York State police. They decided to go with another model. Price for an unfired one in the original box is usually in the $ 1000.00 range. It is the only fixed sighted "N" frame S&W ever chambered in 357 mag. Hope this helps

520s

From what I have read on the forum here the grips never match. Mine don't

Service weapon like a 28, not deluxe like the 27.

First one I saw was at a show in Dayton, OH around 1995. Unfired in the box with all accessories (everyone knew they were a limited run so many were never fired as instant collectibles) at $300. Thought it was neat but a little too high for me at the time.

Nice gun and congrats on a fine gun, that one is on my list to get, I have a couple Mod. 58's and I love the looks and the feel, the shrouded extractor looks great. Never seen one in person just on the auctions one of these days I will have to hit the "Buy it Now" button!

Well, there was an auction on GB with a "Buy it now" of $2500! That is a little high I think! I figure I have $900 in this one. That probably is a little high too, but at least I have one!;)

The model 520 (357 mag) is more like the model 58 (41 mag) fixed sight n-frame. The NYSP cancelled the order on the model 520 and took delivery of the new model 681 (357 mag) f/s SS 4 inch L-frame. I see your box doesn't match the serial number for your gun. The number on your box is 15 numbers away from my gun. As far as the grips go, none of the numbers match the actually serial number for the guns, somewhat close sometimes. Congrats on the new gun! Joe
