My next revolver purchase is?

What you really need now is a model 19! You have the new version of a 357, so now go out and find a nice example of an old version 357. Model 19 is one of the best revolvers of all time!! If you got extra money to spend you could even step up to a model 27!! Beautiful checkering on top! There is my recommendations in both a K- frame or an N-frame, either one is a nice "older version" of what you have.

I'm partial to N frames myself, so I would suggest getting a 627 in 357 mag or get a 29 or 629 in 44 mag. I have the 627 Pro with the 4" barrel and it is a load of fun. I also have a 629-3 Classic with the 6 1/2" barrel and it is a dandy range gun and accurate. It would also make for a great hunting weapon with a proper chest holster design as it's a bit on the heavy side. The full lug barrel of the Classic 44 also helps a lot sting out of 44 mag recoil too.

You'll never go wrong by adding another j-frame. Love 'em. Now, having said that, take a look at the 629's in .44 magnum/.44 special. Manageable power and lots of fun, too.

My first S&W revolver was a 686 as well.

Agree that your next buy should be an N frame. TRR8 is fine, but why not branch out a little? A prelock 629 or 657 (.41 Mag) would be great, or even go older if you can into the realm of the P&R magnums.

If you stumble across an older target-style .22LR or .38, get it. These are really undervalued right now and cheap to shoot. Sounds like you're looking more for shooters than your main home/carry handgun.

Welcome from KY! I'm going to say that at some point in time you're going to have to get a model 15, just to see what all the fuss is about how well they shoot.

I guess I still need to get a 686! Love my 696 and my first was a 66, but there are a lot of them I still "need" to get, along with quite a few 3rd gen semi's.

Welcome to the forum Norb.If I were you,I'd consider a 44Mag and more so if you reload.That way,you can tailor the load to your liking.
And if you like having the guys come to you at the range and ask tons of questions about your gun(and even to try it),consider the .41 Mag.
I got a few in both calibers and love them all.

If it's to be a shooting at the range gun, it's hard to beat a plain old 6 inch 686. Not as fancy or expensive as some of your choices but loads of fun and plenty accurate. Can be used for hunting too.

Everybody should have a 44 magnum in the safe.
If you are a handloader, one of the 2 L-frame 44's. Hot factory ammo is a handful(ha) in those but 44 special to low end 44 mag loads are fun to shoot.

On a completely different tangent - I enjoy shooting my 63-5, two hands, one hand, SA, DA, at a nickle a pop it's all good.

I think the natural progression would be to 'step up' to .44 mag. If you're going to own revolvers, I see .357 & .44 mag as the two most pressing reasons 'why'. Just my opinion. Not that I have anything against other caliber revolvers, I just see these as 'must haves'. I started with .44, and very pleased with that, am now shopping backwards into .357.

I like the .357 because the 357 and 38 bullets are interchangeable. In an emergency I don't want myself or my wife to be looking for the correct ammo to shot if need be. We certainly lack the experience that a lot of folks in here do but that my thought.

I would love a 686, but until Smith gets rid of the internal lock that won't happen. I have 4 Smiths without the lock, but they seem to be forcing me to buy my first Ruger GP 100.
