I picked up my M&P sport 2 last week here in south africa.I have noticed a scratch on the upper. It looks like a scratch that was sprayed over by the factory. Now the scratch I dont worry about, unless it is a crack that was covered over. If you can just have a look at the picture I added.

I think it's a scratch. A crack would be the same all the way down. This looks like something skipping down the side. There are some fine lines and thicker ones as well

What kind of warranty do you have in SA?

Looks like the receiver was gouged by something before being annodized... shouldn't affect function, but I would not be happy paying full price for a blemished rifle.

Here in SA its a bit more difficult to get something replaced even with a warranty. It take up to 3 months just to get a license approved for every firearm one wants to get. Was in contact with SA importer of S&W and was told by them that S&W informed them that its a machine mark that the bead blast didn’t remove. Just wondering if this has been seen before

It's cosmetic only. I wouldn't worry about it. After you've shot it a few times you won't even notice, and you'll add more blemishes of your own to it.

Mine came with a superficial ding on the barrel. I could have sent it back, but I chose not to. My guns are for shooting. None of them are perfect even if they started out that way in the beginning (which most did not).

Sorry for you. In the US it would be a returned item ASAP and most likely the dealer would take it back and deal with SW.

The AR platform in general isn't known for being highly refined.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it and just enjoy shooting it.

Don't worry it's not a crack. If it feeds , fires, ejects and is accurate, hang on to it . I learned the hard way that returning a good shooter because of a minor blemish can get you a perfect looker that has feeding and accuracy problems....it's a lean, mean, killing machine it's going to get battle scars.

I had one where the upper actually had wrinkles in it where the forging did not fill out completely. I shot the snot out of it for 11 months because they are battle rifles. I finally decided it would negatively affect resale value so I sent it back. S&W stuck my barrel in a new upper.

I'm sure what you've got is a tooling scratch. I have some on a couple of my S&W stainless steel handguns, but they are so minor, it doesn't warrant a return. Unless you have a more serious issue with the firearm, I wouldn't be concerned enough to have it replaced. Shoot the snot out of it and enjoy!

Sorry. Didn't finish my thought. Being that these are battle rifles, a few warts does not seem that important to me and gives them character. I have a competition rifle that doesn't have any finish left on the case deflector or most sharp edges. I can't say that I even notice the wear anymore.

I hope you can ignore it and not let it affect your feelings toward the rifle. I have a couple of blued steel rifles with higher grade wood stocks that I hate to even bring out of the safe. I don't hunt with them and usually shoot my AR's instead because I don't want to ding that magnificent wood.

I agree, I would not be happy with a blemish like that on a firearm I paid full price for. But, if you want to send it back and wait out those 3 months............

And I'm guessing that he paid more than the $500 price that we are seeing here. But given the OP's situation, I would live with it too.

Paid R17500 for it. And you buy it, than apply for it. And still it is not 100% you might even get it.
$1 = R13.08

I can imagine how you feel with the defect ..

But do you have an AR with even a worse defect .. Looking at my S&W A15 Tactical and then at your picture .. yours doesn't look like it has the Melonite coating mine has .. yours looks rough while mine is very smooth .. and is a true black color and as smooth as a varnished wood table top ..

I don't think yours has a coating on it .. Is there a way for you to compare yours to another there around you ??

You may have multiple defects ..
