Living in the vast ammo wasteland also known as New Jersey, I was hoping to stop at the Cabelas in E. Hartford, Connecticut as I passed by on my way home, and shop the type of store we can only dream about in Jersey.

Always the cautious one, I called ahead to see if they could sell to an out of state resident.

Alas, the answer was no.

This means that to get exotic ammo like 300 Savage and match grade 223 I need to buy online

I'm 40 minutes away in MA, and I can't buy there, either. There is a way, though. You need to get an ammo permit from the CT state police for $35. I haven't done it yet. I may apply for a CT carry permit instead. Don't even bother asking here in MA, though.

I am about 90 miles from the Cabelas in Hamburg PA and I am allowed to shop for ammo there.

But it's a lot easier to shop online, so long as the seller will ship to Jersey. Most will, some will not. One asked for a picture of my NJ firearms purchaser identification card.

Try hitting up some of the Pennsylvania gun shows. Allentown used to be a decent one when I lived in NJ 15-20 years ago.

Here in NC we can also purchase ammo anywhere that sells it. Only time anyone is asked questions is if they appear to be under 21. Unfortunately I don't get asked that question anymore.

It's hard to imagine we all live in the same country but state to state there is such a huge difference.

Yup, CT sucks. Need a Pistol Permit, Ammo Cert or LongGun Cert to even buy ammo at all. They can't sell to out of staters for that reason. But I did stock up on 9000 primers, 6# of Powder and some bullets, no permit/ammo cert required for any of that stuff? CT...go figure.

In IL, you are required to have a FOID (Firearms Owner Identification) card to buy, own, or carry ammo. To buy online, you must submit a copy to the seller!

Got The Blues In NY

A New York resident may not purchase ammo out of state unless he goes through an FFL. Last time I checked, FFL dealers were charging $10.00 per transaction.

No ID needed here in New Hampshire, although we do have at least one large retail operation in the southern part of the state that won't sell to Massachusetts residents (or Mass residents without the appropriate license, not sure which), so they ask for an ID. That's their policy, however, not the law.

Ma. won't even sell non-residents a lousy box of ammo. Seems Ma, Conn, New York, New Jersey, are good states to stay away from

It seems the good folks of MA have forgotten their roots (Lexington, Concord).

Not so! A New York State resident may physically purchase ammo outside of New York State without going thru a New York FFL. In addition, a number of on-line suppliers will ship directly to a New York purchaser.
