Went to that popular sub shop today. You know which one...$5.00 footlongs...The sandwich was a little over $6 and I gave the kid a $10. He proceeded to put my change in the jar before I yelled an unkind word at him.

I aint tipping some kid for making a sandwich from precut lunchmeat and tossing some onions and lettuce on a roll. The waitress at Applebee's doesn't plop a tip jar on my table after bringing my meal and she does more work. She also has to share her tips with the busboys.

These fast food joints are entry level jobs. All of us has had at least one in our youth. We lived at home and were happy to have some money of our own.If you have a family to support you don't belong working in one of these places.

To this kid I say this...There are service oriented jobs that do warrant a tip for service above and beyond the normal but your's isn't one of them.Go cry to your parents!

Feel free to bash me guys...I'm not a scrooge...I just have my limits for how much I'll tolerate from ingrates.

no bashing here!

I for one think it's VERY RUDE for ANYONE to ***-u-me I meant for my change to go into a jar on the counter. I really don't care for that chain so I don't know if its a company policy, but I prefer Togo's, and have been known to tip the person making my sandwich if they make it right.
Bottom line-It should be MY (our) choice to give extra, but I can assure you the first person that tries to decide that for me, is in for a surprise.

So you did get your change back right? I definitely would have. That's pretty bold for a counter guy to not only decide for you that were going to tip him, but also how much!

Got my change and wont go to any of their stores again.Been thinking about writing a letter to the corporate office but it really isn't worth my time.

These kids today have no sense of what a job is worth but they sure know how to scam us or their parents to get what they want.

The only times I ever left a tip at Subway, was when Sarge and I used to eat there and the person working cleaned off our table even though we would have.

I have problems with tipping, to begin with.

People say, "They only pay the waitress 2.00, so you HAVE to tip them or they'll starve". My thought is, "Find a job that pays better".

But, if I go to Franks Steak and Eggs, where my T-bone steak dinner is only 10 bucks, okay, I can see how he might be paying his waitresses 2 dollars. But when I got to Delmonicos, where the T-bone dinner is 75 dollars, I don't think they are only getting two dollars an hour. And whether she is getting paid 2 dollars or not, she wants a whole lot more tip for bringing me that 75 dollar steak than the girl at Franks did when she brought me the ten dollar one. Same amount of work, but the other girl is SUPPOSED TO get a bigger tip.

I get bent when the delivery guy walks with my change. You know - the pizza is 18.50, you give him a 20 and he turns around and starts to walk off. He always looks so surprised. "You WANT the CHANGE?????" Hell yeah, I want the change. It's my money. I will be the one that decides IF I'm gonna tip, and I'm damn sure the one that decides HOW MUCH I'm gonna tip.

And if some cashier put my change in the tip jar, what would come out of my mouth would be MANAGER!!! And when he showed up, I'd point to the cashier and say, "That sumbich just stole four dollars from me".

Sorry but YOU are the rude one. Unless the kid is a grease ball with boogers hanging out then he probably deserves at least the coin from your change.
If you are too poor or too chintzy to give a tip then say say Pardon me but I need that back. People in the service industry are stomped on all too often.
Get bullied in HS? Taking it out on the service people? All ya gotta do is yell MANAGER! Make you feel like big ****? Probably!

Like many folks who used to work for tips, I'm a generous tipper. Its part of the cost of eating out. I've even tipped waitresses who didn't wait on me when I saw some low-life stiffed them.

But, I agree somebody shouldn't just assume a customer's change should go in the jar.

I never tip at Subway, their food sucks so I don't even go there. :D

Eat fresh?

My great grandmother was a waitress her entire life and taught me the meaning of a TIP.

I tip 20% or better when I get good service, but I and only I get to decide if the service is good!

Provide poor, slow, or inattentive service, don't expect to receive a tip.

If some punk were to take my money and pocket it, he/she is going to get a rude awakening!

I'm certainly not knocking you but another pet peeve of mine is people thinking that if a fast food place has tables they must also have busboys.

Heh heh, I think the tipping when we were at Subway--was Sarges idea. But the one we went to the most, really did have a deserving staff and we each usually left a $1 tip each time. I rarely go to the Subway near me because its an unkempt shop. There is another by the WM I go to all the time and they are much different.

I got over charged for a $5 dollar foot long once. She charged me an extra dollar. I figured she needed that dollar more than I did. I felt bad for the gal. On the other hand I must look dumb. I chalked it up to another experience about life. My brother went to high school with the owner and CEO of the $5 foot long sandwich shops. He knows him very well.

I grew up in northern NJ. We moved to a city in ct. Now I live in the more rural area(country). I went down to the local coffee stop were the state workers were having coffee. I was in my camo pants and sweat shirt. One of them said "hick" under his breath. I laughed inside because I fooled them. I'm just a kid from Jersey. I can blend in anywhere.

Same here. However, I don't tip at fast food joints. I don't eat at fast food joints anymore, but that's beside the point.

I don't think you were out of line for wanting your change back. I think it was pretty nervy of the kid just to assume!

I usually tip pretty well. And I will even put a buck or whatever in the tip jar at a sandwich place. But having the cashier tip himself $4 on $6 sandwich out of your $10 is not acceptable. I would not put up with it either.

Sounds like perhaps a bit of hyperbole to make a point. ANYONE doing that wouldn't last very long. How dumb would you have to be not to realize that?

Heck, with the Brothers connection-to the CEO, should have you a free footlong for life thing. One of my neighbors gets free Whataburgers for life-since he's best friends with one of the owners kids. :D Just a thought though.

I think some assume thats the way its going to be-because they know most people might be too shy-to ask for their change? It happens to me too but--sometimes I will ask for my change back if I really need it.

You're absolutely right! I know I've never looked at it that way before but the tip might also go to the maître d,bartender and hatcheck girl.
