I picked up this 5 incher about a year ago for $800. These stains etc are mostly just below the barrel rib and I can feel them with my fingernail on the guns surface. Brass wool didn't seem to phase the marks so what could this be and what would fellow members suggest?

First thing I'd do is look at them through a loupe. See if they are raised above the surface or etched into it. If its raised I'd try acetone on a soft cloth to dissolve them Tf it's etched into the finish there's not a lot you can do, other than try to cover/hide them.

I'd try some Flitz polish and a kitchen-type Scotchbrite pad (non-scratching), like in the link. Take your time and keep working at it. I cleaned up a really cruddy nickel plated gun with Flitz and the pad, shines like new now.

They look like marks from set screws, like there was some type of scope mount or additional barrel rib on the gun in the past ? Just a WAG, but if you can feel them with a fingernail they wouldn't seem like a stain.

My thoughts also.

Yep, clearly set screw dents on the left side from a clamp on accessory sighting system. When the rear sight was replaced the wrong replacement one was used which is why it sticks out the front. It needs bluing touch up as well after you trim it back.

You'll need to sand those out carefully with 1000 grit sandpaper using a small, flat sanding block. then 1500, finally 2000. Tape around the area so you don't take of any more blue than needed. Touch up with OxPho blue 'paste' from Brownells.

I don't see copper color on the right side. But again, wear thru the blue from the right side of the clamp. Use OxPho after cleaning with alcohol.

My first thought also. Personally, I'd just live with them. Part of the history, even if that history is unknown.

King Super Sight Rib?
Was removed and the mounting screws left marks on the barrel's rib?

Well, possibly--never mind I've never seen a King Super Target rib installed on a gun with its own rib already there. Then there's the matter that the King rib is a "floating" rib---attached at two points (and under tension). The two points are the nub left of the original front sight (That remaining after the lads at King had their way with it with their milling machine.) where pins are employed, and the single (one only) screw at the rear (which goes into the top strap, and serves double duty---also as the elevation adjusting device). More to the point, there are no screws attaching the rib to any part of the barrel. And if that sounds like a remarkably sneaky, clever, and well thought out method, it is----sure enough!!!

If you don't like the way it is, I'll be happy to accept it at Doug's Home for Wayward Firearms, Dogs, and Dissolute Women.
