I believe that I will have to install a gas ring on a Model 25 cylinder. Any special tools needed or should it be best left to a professional?

TIA for any response.

Why do you think the gas ring needs replacing?

The orginal was pressed into place using a guide rod on a fixture. If you simply tap it into place with a hammer, you risk deforming it. Unless you go to the trouble to turn a properly dimensioned pin to use in installing it.

Gas Ring

I bought a model 25 cylinder in .45 ACP from GPC to build a snub nose. The assembly came w/ cylinder and extractor only so I need to put it together.

Okay. Installation of gas ring as follows:

1. Trial fit the gas ring in the cylinder. It should not go in easily. It's a "press fit" meaning the hole diameter and the gas ring outside diameter are such that a slight force is needed to assemble them.

2. Using solvent (mineral spirits, alcohol, acetone, etc) clean the hole and the gas ring (bushing) to remove all grease & oil.

3. Using a lathe or drill press, turn a rod tool with reduced diameter that will slip into the bushing and support the bushing edge on a shoulder. If using a drill press and mill file, you can almost as easily make this tool as if you had a lathe.

4. Apply red locktite (the permanent assembly stuff) you can buy at the auto parts or hardware store. To the bushing and hole.

5. Assemble the bushing & cylinder, and use the rod tool to tap the bushing to fully seat it in the cylinder. Use cotton swabs to remove all excess Locktite or it will interfere with extractor rod & springs.

JT,

Thanks for the detailed reply. Judging by the precision involved, I will let David Clements do the gas ring when he does the rest of the work on my conversion.
