I was at a local gun show last weekend and picked up a set of combat stocks that were off of a PC N frame gun, at least that is what the dealer said. When I put them on my 627 of 1989 the upper section of the backstrap had a slightly different curve making them slightly undersized. My question is; are the earlier N frame guns different from the PC guns?

Probably K/L's- by your description it sounds like K/L stocks on an N sized frame. Any pics?

1989 isn't that early, but there is some variation in grip frames. I expect less of it with CNC machining, but It‘s still there. How much is it off? K frame stocks on an N frame will show maybe 1/8" of the back strap at the top. It’s obvious. If there’s just a sliver of grip frame showing somewhere along the contour, see my signature line! I’ve ordered replacement Eagle SS grips from S&W and they weren’t close. The second set they sent me fit fine (but not perfect). Sometimes stocks require fitting.

Photos would help.

Sorry for the delayed response, I've been out of town for a few days.

No pic.s I ended up returning the grips. They were probably off about an 1/8 inch at the top of the backstrap. It was more than normal hand fitting should be. Thanks for the help.

Here are some pics of my 627 with PC stocks. The stocks are by no means a perfect fit but they work for me.
