Almost exactly one year ago, I had my first up close and personal experience with a FEMA-certified natural disaster. It rained non-stop for three days, causing massive flooding throughout the area. Having a home on a river bank proved to be a sobering reality. The Mighty Susquehanna rose 15'-25' above its normal level (depending on the location) and broke through four plots down from me. It quickly engulfed the neighborhood, filling up basements, swamping yards, and eventually crossing over to the Chemung River. I have never felt more helpless ... or more terrified ... watching the water rise and praying.
We missed the evacuation call, so we were left to hunker down and hold the fort. Ultimately we were fortunate ... despite having 7'+ of river water and sludge in the basement, not a drop hit the main level. The water stopped rising literally 3" before going through the house and out the front door. Others were not so lucky ... many lost their houses and businesses downtown.
I've attached a few photos from the day taken from the front door. Yes, there is a street under all that water. For reference, the square concrete pillars are 20" tall sitting atop a 6" curb.
For all forum members down south in the tropical storm and hurricane path, my thoughts are with you. Stay safe and God speed.
