I think the one at Pearl was a sailor, and the one at Pensacola was a Saudi pilot trainee.

That's the fine odor of flowing crude oil. It was pretty prevalent in the days immediately after 9/11.
Our good friends the Saudis have killed more Americans by far than our good friends, the Israelis (USS Liberty, June 8, 1967). I'll bet the Kurds wish they had some oil.

I don't see any conspiracy to "keep quiet" about this, no cover up. Details of a shooting like this...especially one that takes place on a military base...will never be immediately released, no matter what's known or not known. Any details that might be released have to be cleared to make sure they don't violate or disclose base security practices. Plus, details about something like this are always sketchy, even hours after the event takes place. And since the shooter was a Saudi national, there may have had to be a bit of diplomatic tip-toeing in any press releases.
Now this is something I'd wonder about if I wanted to spend a lot of time thinking about this. The shooter was reportedly killed by an Escambia County sheriff's deputy. And two other sheriff's deputies were there and were wounded.
My question would be...why were they there? Were they called to the scene, or were they already in place. And why wasn't the problem handled by base security personnel instead of civilian law enforcement? Why would someone call the cops when there are supposed to be trained military security people already there?
Military personnel aren't allowed to be armed when on base, except for security forces. But three sheriff's deputies were there, and armed. And what would their jurisdiction be on a U.S. military station?
Being it was a Saudi it could be a sticky wicket for sure.
Many of the personnel in the Saudi military are sons of high ranking military. That in turn means that they have connections to the rulers of the country.
At least that was was was told to me by a younger Saudi that came here (Albany NY Area) for his education and the opportunity to drink and party hearty here.
He was very heavily involved with a local girl, treated her well and gave her good gifts. jewels and a brand new Camaro. Told her right from the beginning no way could he marry her or take her back with him when his time over here was done. He was the son of a well placed General. Last I heard of him he was a colonel in the air force and doing very well.

The base commander at Kirtland AFB allows current and retired law enforcement officers to carry on base if they maintain their LEOSA qualification. Perhaps the same is true there.
