I don't have my SCSW with me but ..... all S&W owners and/or gun lovers should have one.

You'll really enjoy the reading and pictures.

BTW - SCSW is Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson. Big hard-back book worth about 5 times what it costs!

Serial# BLK18XX would date to the early 90's, probably 1992ish.
BUT, there is a problem. You say the revolver is a Model 17-4. The -4 production and engineering change occurred in 1977 and was followed by the -5 production and engineering change in 1988, and the -6 production and engineering change in 1990. SO, something is not right in Nevada. The revolver can't be a -4. The serial# is located on the bottom of the grip frame (butt) and you may have to remove the grips (if it has target stocks) to see it. Report back and someone will help you out.

Looked under the grip,much better stamp,its 3lk18xx

That makes a huge difference!

The serial# dates to about 1978.

Two points - the SN likely starts with 31K, and the production and ship (sales) date may be close together or days/months apart.

Ok, third point - we need photos! :)

xxK numbers were used out of sequence.

31K numbers were issued in 1979. But the point made by 824tsv still applies.
