NEED A LITTLE HELP WITH A BERETTA 92FS

Hey Fellas..........

I need a bit of help regarding a Beretta 92FS (ser # BER 2457XXZ)

I would like to know when it was made and if it was one of the improved models that was made after the "flying slide" fiasco. I know virtually nothing about this model as I have never owned one before and up 'til now never had any interest in one. Any help or advise given would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I believe that all 92FS's are post-slide pistols. The guns that had the problems were the Model 92F's. I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Guess no one else here has knowledge of the 92FS. I looked on line but couldn't find out a date of manufacture.

You can always try the Beretta forum.
The post slide solution was to add a stop at the rear of the frame. Looks like a round disc on the left side just below the safety/hammer drop lever.

Beretta uses a date code, usually a two letter code in a box near the trigger guard. I believe they stopped using this coding around 2008, but not positive.

I can't help, but here's a 100% Beretta 92 compact/slimline 8 rounder I picked up from Armslist last summer for $575.00. As much as I disliked the M9 issued to me when I was active, this compact makes me re-think Beretta.

I have two FS92's, one USA made one Italian, the US made has s/n BER123xxx..so I have to assume it has made prior to yours. Never one problem with either, even killed a deer with one.

So me and my cousin are coming back from lunch, we left our rifles at camp, and on the rebound there is a legal buck right on the dirt road, (these are the CA black tail deer, not the biggest deer). From behind my seat I pull out the Beretta/with a magazine of hollow points, the deer doesn't move, I open my door and get out, he's still there, maybe 10 yards, two shots, he's down!

I have a 92FS with a P in a small shield on the trigger guard. It's an Accokeek gun, but I can't determine the date of manufacture.

I like mine. The slight radius on the backstrap does make the gun handle better than the older one and the M-9.

To answer your question, I understand that the FS all have the slide stopping feature and that is why they have the "S" in the name. It stands for Safety.

But please join us on the Beretta board and ask there to be certain. I use the same name there.

Give this gun a chance. I think you'll like it. My son carried an M-9 in Iraq, where fine dust and sand were real problems in keeping weapons functional. He never had a malfunction while using genuine Beretta or Mec-Gar magazines. Some men who didn't maintain their pistols well or who had cheap aftermarket mags did very occasionally experience jams

I often trust my M-92FS with my life. That's the highest endorsement I can give a gun. Mine feeds so smoothly in a straight line that I can't even be sure I chambered a round from the magazine. I can aways tell when a 1911 feeds the ctg. up the ramp.

First, I'm glad that no one stole your rifles when you left them in camp.

What HP load did you use on the deer and where did you hit it? My Beretta has the Federal 124 grain HST ammo. But I think that Hydra-Shok or Gold Dot would also drop a deer at modest range, with precise placement.

I know that the late gun writer Larry Koller killed a whitetail with a .38 Colt Diamondback and 125 grain ammo. The 9mm is hotter.

1st - my camp is in nowhere'sville in Norcal, yes there are still places. 14 miles from the nearest small town, population 170, I used win 147 hp.

I keep one around because until recently mags and ammo were cheap. I've put over 1,000 rounds of different ammo through mine without a problem. If yours is the FS you shouldn't have any problems with it.

Looking up a Beretta SN

I know this is late, but this page allows you to look up your serial number for date of manufacture: Firearm Technical Data

Also, this page has a chart of imported Italian-made proof marks that you can consult to find the year of manufacture: Date of Manufacture

The "faulty slide" issue you mention occurred in the civilian 92SB and the M9 models in late 1987 and was corrected by mid 1988. I have and do own a bunch of 92s.... never had a bad one. Some think they are a bit big...... and the whole slide thing.... shooting NATO submachine gun ammo or a bad batch of slides or ..... or ....or.............. Which IIRC was about as rare as winning the Power Ball.......and I've not heard of it occurring since the late 80's


If it is marked FS then the new safety is included........ the F and M-9( if not marked FS) do not have the updated safety................

While not a fan of the full size 92 I have and love the Centurion, Compact, Type M ( 8round single stack) and EliteII

Alnamvet68... the M like yours are great....... while bigger than a 3913 they are my second favorite carry gun....... between the 3913 and 6906.

I've got a Centurion. It's big in the grip with a long trigger pull but I think it's a great tool for many applications. I put the SS barrel on it due to the slide putting a "smiley face" mark on the factory barrel. Joe

Look on the back end of your 92FS. You should see what looks like a semi circular piece of metal coming up from the frame. that is the slide retention fix that Baretta came up with. If you take the slide off you will also see a small groove machined on the underside of the slide that the piece of metal rides in. Think I have about 35oo rounds through mine. Only repair done was to replace the firing pin which got cut by the escaping gas when using Rem-Umc yellow box ammo. Frank

Congratulations on the 92fs, I think you will love it. Mine feeds and fires anything...never one hiccup even on very cheap ammo. As stated already the s in the fs means slide stop and it works just fine. I would feel very confident in your new Beretta, enjoy.
