Ever since I bought my Springfield GI .45 years ago I've fallen in love with the 45 cartridge and am in the market for another for open carry (Only option in the peoples republic of Wisconsin) Now I've narrowed it down to 3 choices but Im open to other ideas. My price range is between 500-775 The three Im looking at are

S&W 4506
Glock 21
FNP-45

So if you have any critique of these or the like let me know, thanks.

I just sprung my mustang from wiskonsin a few days ago .. I scaled the cheddar curtain at 110 MPH crossing the Mississippi creek as a matter of principal.

I'd stick with the 1911.
if bad ever happens and a case ruptures there is comfort in having a proper steel frame to keep your hand in tact.
its also a slimmer profile that will aide in concealment ... should you too decide to scale the cheddar curtain another day, or .. deem fit to do what ya gotta do to avoid getting done.;)

The Glock 21 (or 21SF) is the least complicated, least subject to environmental adversities, probably most reliable, and longest-lived of the posted alternatives --- this should be an easy choice!

If you like the way yhe 1911 feels and shoots, you probably won't like the Glock or the FNP.
Both are double stack,so they have fatter grips. The grip angle on the glock is different
from the 1911 also.Don't know about the S&W.

your price range is certainly stout enough to get anything you want...if you like the Springfield GI ,why not a nicely priced 1911? or I can understand you wanting something different than the 1911.
I have had many of each and several Glocks and I personally prefer the 30 to the 21 for carry ...can pick one up around here for 500...out of your choices ...the 21.

While I do love my 1911s, they are not my main carry guns. Do yourself a favor and at least handle a Springfield XD-45. Since open carry is your only option, this gun will be just fine. I carry the 4" bbl. service model concealed every day.
14 rds, of .45 and one extra 13 rd. mag is plenty of hard hitting firepower. I love the way this gun fits in my hand, and they can be had for around $500. Try one on for size. Also, mine has been 100% reliable with any HP I have shot through it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I do have my eyes on another 1911 but I want to go big with my next one like a Night hawk or kimber. Wheelgunner I cant believe I didnt think of the XD I will absolutely check one of those out. I have fired the Glock 21 before and I did like how it fit since I have big mitts. Again much appreciated.

Good choices all; that being said, I'd be very tempted to buy either the Glock 21 SF or the Springfield XD (m)...they both are super reliable, have good CS and pieces parts are available for both...IIRC, the Glock may have more/better accessories and or parts vendors.

I think it would be a matter of which one fits your hand better...again IIRC, the Springer has different backstraps available that you can semi-custom tailor the grip to fit you..the Glock OTOH does (IMVHO) has a little different grip angle that some people don't care for...

Either one would be a great choice, best of luck and have fun choosing!!

Pics are always welcome!

I like the 4506, but I like the 4566 TSW even better. The slightly shorter barrel seems to make it much handier for me.
Another alternative you might consider is the SIG 220, mine is very like the S&W 3rd gen pistols, perhaps a better trigger.
If you post this same inquiry in the S&W Simi- Auto area you might get more votes for the 3rd gen pistols, IMO these are fail safe never wear out pistols. I have had a 1006 for many years with absolutely no failures.

Have you considered a Sig 220 Stainless or a Sig P220 Combat?

the venerable .45 ACP....Sig P220

Interesting comment on having big mitts. My good friend stands 6'5" and tips em at 265lbs-no fat. He loves the feel of his early West German Sig P220 .45 acp in his considerable "mitts". I, however am 5'8" 230lbs-packin some fat.....I also love the great ergonomics of the early West German Sig P220 .45 acp. I have medium-sized hands at best. See what feels the best in your hand, and go from there. I like the fact that the P220 has a de-cocker. I personally like night sights also. At any rate, mine seem to shoot with excellent accuracy. Happy choosin'..........Sprefix

Although it's price exceeds your budget by around $250, I really like my HK 45. Available in full size, or compact.

P220 grip size, between the factory wood, plastic, Nil, & Hogue, you can tailor a 220 to fit most any size hand.
With my eyes closed I can not tell the difference between the P220 SSE with factory wood and 1076 with curved back grips, they almost fit the same holster, same grip angle & wt. etc.

If you like the way the glock21 shoots you'll love the xd45. It's smoother than the glock. I'm like you on liking the bigger handle since I have big hands so my xd45 fits really well. You won't be disappointed and their's quite a few holster options also so you can find the one you like.
