I picked up a pre 36 sn 45xxx at a gun show today and would like to get the correct box for it. Would it be the red box ? Thanks in advance for the help.
But, I'll answer your question anyway. I'd say your gun dates to 1954, so most likely the blue two-piece starburst or sun-ray box. Won't be an easy find, but someone's got one out there somewhere.............
Serial numbers for the gun that was in the box are usually in grease pencil on the outside bottom of the boxes from that era. So look for a serial number close to yours. It could even be a red box because there's always a transition period when boxes are changed and your gun is in a transition where it could have come in either red or blue box.
I have data that has serial #486xx and 518xx in red boxes! I also have serial # 526xx and #530xx in a Sun Burst blue box! Red boxes are getting hard to find and rather expensive when you see them! Good luck!
