I'd go with BCM over Colt.
Need help choosing an AR

I enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1975, and my M-16 was a Colt. I made up my mind that if I ever had the opportunity, I was going to own an AR-15 rifle one day, and that it would be a Colt. It took me almost 40 years, but I finally bought my Colt CRE-18 a couple of years ago. I added a Nikon P-223 scope, and it has been an absolute delight to shoot. Mine is primarily for the range, but I hope to use it to hunt hogs and varmints some day.

In the past I would've recommended Colt, but BCM offers an equivalent quality rifle that meets or exceeds all of the government TDP specifications at a very reasonable price. Plus you can build one virtually any way you like it. Want an authentic M4-pattern 14.5" rifle with a permanently attached A2 flash hider? They've got it. Want a 16" barreled middy with a rail handguard already installed? They've got those too. Want an uber-tacticool "mission ready" rooney gun? If you've got the money, they can probably build it for you.
Had I known of BCM back when I looked at and purchased my LE6920, I would've passed on the Colt and saved a few hundred for the exact same rifle with a mid length gas system.

I got an email today from Aero Precision, their AC15 entry level rifle is on sale now for 699. Might as well take a look. You are getting low enough to spruce it up as you want.

Hellrasier, you like that piston thing? I never shot, handled, or even seen one, just read about them, in a fast wimmin magazine, I don't know if I would like one ( ar ) I like wimmin or not. How are they to clean back up, the ar, not the wimmin? regards Ernie

I've had my Daniel Defense (DDM4V3) for almost four years. I've changed out some furniture and added some optics. Other than that, haven't changed anything. About 5K rounds without a single hiccup. A little more $, but it's always worked.

If you got the money, get the Colt. Full disclosure; I don't own a Colt. I have a Bushmaster and a PSA.

I am a retired Army Infantry senior NCO and also a retired cop.
If you really want to learn what the best ARs are is to learn to assemble one yourself. You can buy the lower and a lower parts kit and assemble it (using a YouTube video there is a million of them "how to assemble") and learn exactly how your weapon operates and what needs to be done to not only improve it but to customize it to something that you want.
If you're going to be a rifleman you need to know your weapon. The best place to start is Palmetto State Armory and buy a lower and a lower parts kit and then put it together. Then pick out an upper you want and add it to your personal lower or better yet, learn how to build your own upper.
Picking out a weapon based on what other people are telling you they like is not learning to make an informed decision.
and by the way, .223 is not 5.56mm. You really do not want an AR chambered in .223 unless it's .223 Wylde

I have a Colt. No problems.
My shooting bud has a Sig, very nice AR.
you need to do the touchy feely thing. Most of the quality ones should be similar.
Pull the name off all good brands and to the gun they say stoner under others brand name.
