I don't know about you, but I must have some air circulation summer and winter when I sleep. Couple of months ago the two lower-speeds on my bedroom ceiling fan went on strike, and I could not get to the switch to replace it – so I decided to just replace the whole unit with a new one… easy enough, right – Not!… I forgot how to wire it. Here is the deal: I have two lines, the original from the light switch and a separate line feeding the fans in all our bedrooms. I started the project and soon decided I am not a young fella, got tired and disgusted. I know a young man who does odd jobs, he told me he has worked on installing and replacing fans – great, come on over, I need help… neither one of us read the instructions – I never do, any way. What he did was to marry-up all black wires together – now my bedroom light switch operates both the fan and the light, as well as all other fans in the other bedrooms. You electricians help me out here. I think the black from my light switch should be connected only to the black & blue that goes to the light kit – Am I right? Thanks for your help.

Pete

If I am correct, There is a black that should run past the box in the ceiling, It most likely has a wire nut, That is the one that had another black that went to your light switch, Then yet another (black) could be a white with black tape on it and that is the one which will go to BOTH the light kit as well as the fan.
This may sound confusing, But I would bet a dollar that it's right.

Hi Oldfella, you are correct thay the blue wire goes to the light kit. The black wire on the fan is for the fan motor. Tie all whites together. Bare wires and green wires tie together and bond to the fan box if it is metallic.

What color wires do you have coming out of the ceiling box. If two blacks go Black/Black Black/Black

If red/black go red/black and black/black from the box wire to the fan wires.

Kanivore - Email sent... Thanks, much appreciated.

Your line that goes to the fans is not switched and should connect to the black wire on your fans. The wire coming from the switch should connect to the blue wire (light kit) on the fan.

The fella who helped me is coming back on Thursday with a friend more knowledgeable in these things. The fan has to be disassembled to see what steps were missed. Thanks all.

UPDATE - No one came to help me

With the very gracious and able assistance of Carnivore, via couple of phone calls, I decided to venture out into the electrical "field" myself. As I suspected, the feller who "helped" me bundle-up all of the black wires together - including the one for the light kit. I also found the neutrals not making good connection (loose), that accounted for two blown fuses (old house, with screw-on fuses). After about two hours (very slow process!), I put everything together and turned every thing back on... just the lights worked. "Carnivore" asked me to test the fan source, I did - Dang, no power for the fans! I failed to notice the fuse was blown but didn't show signs being burned... that was it. Thanks Gary, much appreciated.

Looks like you are becoming an electrician and a computer repair man

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Spotteddog, I need all the good Karma I can get.

OldFella, Glad to help with the electrical, but if you ever have plumbing issues, I am NOT the guy to call, I will have the toilet flushing when you turn on the TV...

Thanks, Karnivore

Plumbing, you say? Oh, yea - for a slow running drain pour about 8 Oz. of baking soda diluted in about a litter of warm water, wait about couple of minutes and pour about a quart of vinegar and watch it bubble up. You'll get a nice clean drain and save big bucks... it works!

Pete

Then it's time to patent and sell it to Home Depot! It's got to be a far more worthwhile idea than most of them I see there any more Karnivore?
