Hello to all. I have received an old Smith and Wesson 32 long ctg which was passed to me from my grandfather. I have no documentation on the gun and would like to know how old it is and any details the serial number might tell. The serial number is a six digit number on the bottom of the gun between the two sided hand grip. The number is " 582639 ". Any hep would be greatly appreciated.

A picture would help but thinking a post war series hand ejector in the 1946-1960 serial range.

Thank you here is a picture. Let me know if you need anything else.

Looks like few post's to your inquire so I'll give it a shot. Yours is a model .32 regulation police manufactured sometime between 1946 (serial number starts at 536000 and ends at 712953 in 1957) If your firearm has the trigger guard set screw, then it was made prior to 1953. You could request a letter from S&W but judging from the condition of the gun, it would not be worth the investment. What I would do is try to get the "surface" rust off the metal with Hoppe's #9 gun solvent and #4 OT very fine steel wool, rubbing gently to remove the rust. Try not to remove the bluing. You will probably have pitting but other than refinishing the firearm, that's about all you can do.

i would like to say welcome to both of you, to the forum!
it is actually a post-war 32 hand ejector. lots of folks call them a "pre-model 30", as model 30 is what they became in 1957, when everything was assigned model numbers, instead of cool names!

the regulation police was closely related, but was identified by a square-butt frame, and became the model 31.

they are neat little guns! have fun with it!

as far as dating it,
yours has the small triggerguard, and triggerguard screw, and is an "improved i-frame, with a coil main spring. i would go out on a limb, and say yours is from about '52 or '53. maybe someone will come along with a close "lettered" example and can narrow it down a little for you.
