I am currently seeking to trade my 9mm shield for another pistol that would be a little more range friendly. I have been offered a 3913 in "like new " condition. I know nothing about the pistol other than the basic stats form internet search. So, would a 3913 be a better range pistol than the shield and what would the current value of the 3913 be in real nice shape?

Thanks

In my mind, I would keep the shield. What do consider makes it less range worthy? I traded a 3913 away, to my sorrow, but do not find it any better than my current Shield. All in the hands of the beholder, I guess. The Shield may be a little lighter, the capacity was the same, 8 rounds. The 3913 was a single/double action, which I liked, I had a spurred hammer installed. But I would not go back, I think the shield is just awesome for its intended purpose. Practice will make it a better range gun. Also a better self defense gun, for which it is made. Which ever you chose, you will have a fine firearm. After all, both are Smiths, right?

I now own a Shield, 3913, and a 3953.

I carry the DAO 3953. Almost as easy to carry as the shield, easier to shoot well for me, slick slide without safety levers and one consistent trigger pull.

3953 is an outstanding gun.

Keep in mind you can always find another Shield, but this may be the only 3913 that ever crosses your path.
Exactly. The wife and I each own a 9mm Shield and I own a 3913, which I was extremely fortunate to find. I would trade any Shield for any decent condition used 3913 all day long. One can always obtain another Shield. Not so much the 3913. :)

Around my parts, a well-kept 3913 usually goes in the 450-500 range. There are better deals to be found, if you don't mind a little wear on it.

I carry a 3914, but to be honest, I can't see how it would be a better range gun than what you have currently. It really depends on the trigger style you prefer. I shot the Shield slightly better than my 3913, but it came down to my preference of a DA trigger for a carry gun.

I have several 3913/14s (no Shields) ......... define "range gun".....IMHO neither is a "target pistol"..... both are intended to be carry guns and concealed carry guns........

I've carried and been happy with a 3913/14 as my primary everyday carry since about 1990......

If you think you would like a 3913... for whatever reason........grab it...... they don't make them anymore and everyday fewer will be found in "like new" condition.

The only true "range guns" in the 3rd Generation..... would be the "long-slide" 590x with 5 or 6 inch barrels........might make an argument for some of the PC guns w/ the bushing and adjustable sights...... but they are PC guns!!!!

Off the top of my head.... can't think of any others.......

OK maybe the adjustable sighted 4506/5s

Great stuff guys!!

A little more background. The shield was my first pistol and bought it because I thought it would be easy to carry and would have some fun at the range with it. I dont carry it but have found myself at the range quite often shooting for fun. So I figured I would try to trade the shield for a pistol with a longer sight radius. I posted in a local forum for the trade looking for a 9mm like a Sig 226/229 type of pistol. When contacted about the 3913 it does have a slightly larger sight radius and barrel plus the DA/SA trigger is something I think I would like to own. I understand it is not much bigger than the shield but it seems to be an "interesting" pistol that many seem to like.

I prefer the 3913 because it's all metal, not a big fan of plastic. A 3913 'like new' is nothing to pass up!

226/229 vs 3913

SIG's are a whole different animal. My 229R1 and 226-EE are a lot more gun than my 3913 & 14. By that I mean, we're comparing single to double stack, to start with. When I first started my quest for a 3913, I heard about the SIG 225/P6 pistols, which are single stack. This might be a closer comparison as both the S&W and SIG are TDA. If I had to choose - I'd take the SIG 225. My 225 is comparable in grip comfort to my 39-2. (Eventually, I purchased a SIG 239, which I think better matches the size and weight of the 3913.) But for concealability, my 3913, narrowed by using the left-side decocker instead of the ambi, is probably the winner. I love my 3rd gen S&W pistols, all are single stack versions - though I started with a 6904 years ago. There's a considerable price point difference between a decent 3913 and comparable 229 and 226 SIGs. All are fine pistols, and my personal preference has been with metal TDA pistols with spurred hammers (my 3913 has a spurred hammer installed). In terms of ease of stripping and cleaning, I'd probably give the edge to the SIG's - and there's no question that for me, the 226-EE is my most accurate pistol. I've had two M&P pistols: M&P 40C and M&P 9C. Both were fine pistols, I just couldn't warm up to them. So, IMO, taking the time to explore owning a single stack 3rd GEN S&W like the 3913 would be well worth your time... I plan on keeping mine for some time to come. If your looking for a 9mm with a longer sight radius and not a CCW then the 5906 can be had for $250- $400 All steel. I find them to be a lot of fun at the range. 3913 is also fun..but as stated neither are actual target pistols.

3913, there are those that have, and those that want. And some of those are the same people. I have a 3913 and a 3914, and am always looking.

The 3913 is enjoyable and forgivable to shoot at the range

The shield is like a little pocket pistol. No fun to shoot.

I'd made the trade. The 3913 is the subcompact that shoots and handles like a mid sized gun.

Boy. Of all the useful information I have read on this site (and there has been quite a bit of it), this is certainly the most gilt-edged, take-it-to-the-bank, inescapable and rock solid fact I have seen yet.
