8.0 grains of Unique will run bullets in the 200-220 grain range from 925-1000 fps from a 4" barrel depending on the bullet. From what some of the posters have said over on the 24 Hour Campfire, yes slow moving hard cast bullets will punch a hole through a deer and kill it but all you have is a hole punch so you may be in for a tracking job.
For a bullet I would suggest the 230 grain Keith style bullet from Leadhead Bullets. It has the largest meplat of any Keith design and runs 1000 fps even from my 4" S&Ws with 8.0 grains of Unique.
I personally like a bullet moving along a little faster and use 12-13 grains of SR4756 for 1250+- fps depending on the bullet or 21-23 grains of H110 for 1300-1400 fps....
But yes it will kill a deer and makes a dandy self defense load also...
