Just acquired a mint model 34-1 nickel 4" and i notice some strange stampings on the gun,,,any help in identifying would be be appreciated.
1) serial number 113xxx for reference
2) inside crane marked "model" on top line,,"34-1" on middle line, and the word "chow" below that
3) under the ejector rod, forward, near the rod latch, the serial # is stamped, however it appears this was over-stamped over another number, and to the rear of that a star is stamped.
4) serial #stamped on rear of cylinder,,first 3 numbers over-stamped over prior numbers .
5) on left side under grips (which were not numbered to gun) several odd markings starting with a square box with PR-N,,,a second square box stamped R-N with the N clearly stamped over an "S",,,,,the word "chow" again over the number 73139,,,,the numbers 3 72 and 1172(again over stamped) and finally,, a hand scratched number 12-77 above FA
All of these markings are stamped prior to the nickel process except possibly the hand etched date and initials but i cannot be sure of that ,,,almost looks to me the gun went back to smith for a re-work??? and these were markings placed on the gun at the time of work and the gun was re-nickel plated? The word "CHOW" on the gun is also a first for me.....#73139 also is on the crane.
Any help in identifying any of these would be greatly appreciated,,,,and if i get no takers, it might be a job for Roy,,,Anyone who wants picks of these markings, I will be glad to provide,,,thanks, bob
