Need new carry gun

If you prefer a revolver, Charter Arms makes a dandy .40S&W snubby, the "Bulldog", I bought a used one in stainless, but thier Melonite finish is very appealing.

I have a Charter Arms Pitbull in 40 and it is some revolver. It is probably the most accurate revolver I have that is less than 24oz. You get the .357 mag energy without the noise, but the recoil feels like a 357.

I'm a believer in having 2 identical or very similar carry pistols. That way if one is in the shop or the evidence locker you grab the spare and roll.

I also know people who have 1 pistol that is used strictly for training with an identical second pistol that's used for carry.

I like this approach. When my 642-1 had to be sent back I was without a gun of any kind for a couple of months. I had no back-up or alternative. Soon after I was able to retrieve an older 642 no-dash that I'd had in storage and it now serves as a back-up to my 642-1.

I also recently purchased a Beretta PX4 Compact, which seems to be taking over EDC duties from my 642. I like it so much, I'm planning on getting another, hopefully in the next month or two, and setting the second one up just like my first (or maybe get the Compact Carry version...I haven't decided yet) so I can have a dedicated training gun that can also serve a back-up role.

As to your original question, seeing as how you're familiar with the M&P9 I think the Shield would be a good option, though I, personally, would lean towards 9mm. Actually, if I were looking for a similarly sized and featured gun, I'd probably lean towards a Kahr 9mm.

Or you could just get a Glock 19. :p

I'm probably going to be tarred and feathered for this, but the best, reasonably priced concealable pistol with maximum firepower I have shot in the last year has to be the SCCY CPX-2. 9mm, 10+1 capacity and a DAO trigger. Think of it as a boxy 11 shot revolver.

IMHO, IF YOU ARE THINKING OF THIS WEAPON AS AN 11 SHOT REVOLVER, YOU ARE MERELY FOOLING YOURSELF......

I SINCERELY HOPE THAT YOU NEVER HAVE TO LEARN THE DIFFERENCE THE HARD WAY......

Over on Defensivecarry.com, one of the regular posters had a SCCY 9mm barrel blow up in his hand.

If I wanted a subcompact double stack 9mm, I'd personally go with the Keltec P11, which SCCY copied with apparently inferior metallurgy.

I have several...

....carry capable weapons, revolver and semi. The Shield is my go to out of all of them for carry. The DAO trigger is very agreeable, close to being like an SA. I've got a big 'Sig' on my nightstand, but I need something light for carry.

My alloy third gen would be great for carry if I wanted a full size especially with a SA. My Kel Tec P 11 would make a good carry weapon or 'truck gun', though it ain't much on looks and only good for close distances, it's reliable. They say it's accurate enough for 7 yards, but the groups really do get 'big' beyond that.

THANK YOU, dr. mordo, FOR THIS VERY INFORMATIVE POST ! ! !

Cops have to train and qualify with the pistol they carry. If yours ends up in evidence, even if you're issued the exact same make and model, you still have to qualify with it. Seems like a good idea to me . . .

I have to agree with some above post on having a steel j frame as opposed to the lighter models. I had a 642 and a 360j that we're VERY uncomfortable to shoot with +P loads. I sold them both. I had a Model 60 Lady Smith. Best Smith ever along with a model 19.
For me a revolver needs to be 21oz or heavier but not over 26oz for the 38+P loads. I appendix carry. I have owned 13 S&W handguns over the years but now carry a Taurus M85 and the new Colt Cobra. I want a 1 7/8" or 2" bbl. Could not find a Smith to fit the bill.
Hope everything works out for you. I agree with above post, to stay with what you've got until you hear back from Smith and know what your options are. Good luck !

Be SAFE and Shoot often!

I'm not sure what you're saying.

Are you saying that having a back up weapon is a good idea or being required to qualify with it is a good idea

As a citizen I'm not going to be issued a replacement weapon and I'm not going to have to qualify with it.

Another vote for Shield in 9mm...cheaper ammo for practice and one more round. That's why I chose it over the 40. I'd also say spring for the 2.0. I've not shot the 2.0 Shield, but I own the 2.0 full size 9mm. The trigger and textured grip blow my 1.0 shield out of the water.

M&P 40 Shield is a nice carry,I have one I used to carry,now I carry my S&W 442-2 or my 638-3 .38 SPL+P .

Your post was about having one weapon for training and another identical weapon to carry. My post pointed out that cops must train and qualify with the weapon they carry, and that seems like a reasonable standard. I was attempting to infer that a citizen who doesn't ever shoot a weapon, but carries it for self-defense, may face some difficult questions . . .

The majority of people I know of are instructors themselves or people who train a lot and have some connection to the shooting sports industry. They wouldn't have any problem explaining why they have and identical set of guns one for training and one for self defense.

A random private citizen such as myself might have a problem explaining it to the police's satisfaction but it's not illegal.

Police are required to train and qualify with their weapon as a condition of employment a private citizen should not be required to train and qualify as a prerequisite to exercising a civil liberty.

I think that's what I wrote . . .

OK but why?

If you were the first person to respond to a shooting call when would the fact that I even had 2 identical guns come up? How would you even know? How many times do people post pictures of their collection of 20 (basically) identical J-Frames? How often does some one post pictures of a half a dozen 1911s? I've seen people on Glock Talk who own multiples of the same gun.

Even if you did go through my safe I'm not going to tell you why I have 2 identical Glock 19s so how do you ascertain my motive?

The only way I see a problem is (as usual) because the citizen opened his mouth and said too much.

2 IDENTICAL GUNS?

IF NOT ILLEGAL you "SHOULDN'T" have to explain squat. IF someone were a LEO/competitor, or just felt like it, I can fully understand having identical guns. Think Jerry Miculek shows up to a competition without an IDENTICAL spare/back up, or 3-4? IF you have the $ & it's legal, IT'S YOUR BIZ. As far as qualifying with an "identical" gun, it seems like a given if you can do it with 1 you SHOULD be able to do it with the other. Having to PROVE it??? NO BIGGIE.

.

Why?? It's not illegal.......does it make the person look like a professional assassin or something????

I've seen photos here with dozens of J-frames, scores of N-frames.

My primary carry gun has been a 3913NL since about 1992/3.... had and still have a first year 3913..... picked up a few other 3913s and 3914 over the last 25 years at great prices. I like to carry a stainless gun in the summer and a blued gun in fall and winter
