Need some help!!!!

Hello!

I'm not a gun buff ... I've had this revolver for over 40 years (inherited), and have never used it ... it has been sitting in a closet, and I decided it was time to sell it. I took it to a few gun shops to get an estimate of value. All say it is in excellent condition and a beautiful gun. One pointed out an inconsistency in one of the serial #'s that makes no sense (I think it may have been a factory "mis-stamp").

The serial # SXXX"0"XX is stamped on the bottom of the grip frame, on the rear cylinder face, and under the extractor star. I have a letter for Roy Jinks indicating that the gun with this SN was shipped from the factory in May of 1957.

Now the inconsistency ... the Serial # stamped under the extractor rod (yoke) is SXXX"7"XX .... all digits are identical except for a "7" as the fourth number rather than a "0".

The gun was used very little by my relative (the original owner) before he passed, and is in great shape ... As I said, I've never used it at all ... but I feel I need an explanation for the inconstency so that I don't mislead potential buyers.

Can anybody solve this mystery for me?? I'd really appreciate it!!!

The number stamped on the barrel under the extractor rod should match the other serial numbers. If I were to guess, I would say there was a part mix up and that somewhere there’s a XXX7XX revolver with a XXX0XX barrel.

Errors of this type from the factory are not unheard of and they will make it right. I suggest you work closely with them and follow whatever instructions they have for you. The problem is, any alteration of a serial number by anyone, other than the manufacturer, causes the weapon to become prohibited and subject to destruction. Criminal charges could attach were a person to knowingly retain possession of such an arm. Keep records of your communication with the factory and get it into their hands as soon as possible for correction.

Don't even think about selling it until it's been made right!

I don't think I would worry about the (misstamp) The barrel, cylinder, ratchet, yoke, are all replaceble parts. The serial number on the frame is the one the revolver is "known by" and the one BATF is interested in. Just tell any potential byer of the number diffrence. On some S&Ws you will find a diffrent number (a frame #) stamped on the yoke and the frame behind the yoke. some people have mistakenly used this for a serial number. My three cents worth.
