I have a question for you more knowledgeable types. I hope I have this in the right section.

My Brother in Law recently acquired a Model 29 S&W 44 Mag. Obviously it's on the "N" frame, and it came (used) fitted with Pachmyer rubber grips. His problem is that the grips push his fingers so far forward (he has large hands) that when the gun recoils it slams the back of the trigger guard against his knuckle. He can't really shoot it this way more than a few times and his finger is bruised. He has a kind of arthritus thing going on with his hands, so his fingers are often swollen - hence the problem.

I believe there are "standard" grips for the "N" frame that do not have any wood in front or back of the grip strap. That might work, but the problem with them is that they would be so small (overall) that he would not have much of a grip.

S&W target grips for the N frame also have wood in front of the strap, so essentially cause the same problem.

Does anybody know of any grips that don't have any wood (or rubber) in front of the forward grip strap, but have a larger portion of the grip extending out to the rear of the rear grip strap to give the grip some size?

In other words something that would give him a decent sized grip to hang on to, but would not crowd his fingers between the grip and the trigger guard?

I've got a number of "N" frames, but all mine have custom grips on them and they all cause the same problem for him.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

Thanks gentlemen

One possibility are factory N frame SB "Combat" stocks, which have extra wood on the forestrap but less than the Target stocks. Also consider padded shooting gloves.

Check out the Herrett Jordan Trooper grips. The were designed by Bill Jordan who was an enormous man, with hands so big that they make an N Frame look like a K-Frame in his grasp. They lower the hand behind the trigger guard and bring it backwards to address the knuckle rapping.

Herrett also makes grips using a tracing of your hand for a custom fit.

Thanks guys. I'll look into that for him. Much appreciated.

Forum member Schofieldkid81 makes what he calls a Franzite clone Wooden N-Frame grip that is noticeably thinner.
His grips are absolutely gorgeous too.
I can't wait to pick up my pair.

Here is the hot ticket, directly from S&W. The Model 500 Impact absorbing Hogue square butt conversion grips, prod# 294670000 $36.76. Rubber Grips - Smith & Wesson

I have them on two 629's and love them. These are longer from front to back with additional rubber behind the back strap.

I have 1-piece Hogue finger groove grips on my 44 mags and the "bust your knuckle" went away. The 8-3/8 barrel eats all the recoil so it still has the original Pachs on it.

I also like the Hogue one piece grip for the Magnums.
