I am in the process of moving and for the next couple months I won't be living full time at either location and an considering putting most guns into storage somewhere, Is this a sane thought? Is there somewhere that would have some room and where I would be able to store 30 some long guns and additional hardware?
I am just concerned that IF someone wanted to make a project of removing items from my safe that would be able to spend hours or days at it IF they knew my schedule which none but my wife does. and she is with me.
Any thoughts on the matter?
Thank you

The Brady Bunch would be glad to take them off your hands.

Seriously, check your state laws as there may be a prohibition on lending someone a firearm for more than 24 hours.

Peter,

A buddy of mine recently went through the same thing, moving from Memphis to Kingsport, TN. I told him to call a mutual friend that is an FFL and see about storing his guns at his shop, as I had no room in my safes. The FFL was more than happy to store them in his shop for a SMALL fee. The only draw back to doing it this way was that all of them had to be entered into the FFL's bound book and transferred back to my friend on a multi purchase 4473 when he picked them up. If you know anyone that own's/works at a gun store check with them about placing them on consignment, with an asking price of $100,000,000.00 (non-negotiable price, of course) per firearm. I will GUARANTEE you NOBODY will buy any of your collection, unless you happen to own the Colt SAA once owned by George Washington that was used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. :D

How about pawning them?

As crazy as this sounds, it's a good idea. Just don't pawn them for much. Depending on state law you should have 60-90 days to pick them up. You will probably have to do a NICs check too. Put the money in the bank.

I am a professional locksmith. And I used to work Saturdays at a friends pawn shop.

In my experience, there are no secure storage companies. Even the one's with onsite managers 24/7 and cameras. Seen many people get ripped off. And it may be against policy to store firearms and/or ammo there.

The pawn shop "should" be very secure and insured. The cost of pawning them versus storage may save you some money.

You can keep them all in my safe. LOL
You may be able to keep them in an evidence locker if you are buddies with a police officer and he is willing to ask his boss. I stored a few that way when i went out of state on work for a couple of months. That is super secure. Get insurance on them regardless if you don't already.

Another Suggestion

I had a friend with a similar problem. He was able to store
quite a few long guns in a vault that he rented from a bank.

Best Wishes,
Tom

As crazy as this sounds, a friend of mine was going to Eurpoe for six months with his family. He went to his bank and they put his guns in their vault. There was a fee for it but where better than a bank to keep your guns.

I would ask around and divide them up between a few trustworthy friends. As long as they have safes, of course.

I am wondering about the bank,
I don't have any friends that have the room or that would take these awful bang sticks in their house,
I am now thinking that there is a room in the basement of the new house which I could put a steel door on, But the room takes water in heavy rains and that is NOT a good place,,,,
Where I live now is pretty quiet, But again, If I am gone for two weeks that is too quiet..
Don't want to Pawn, I have several collectable items like a 1911 from 1912,
NIB Smiths and the like,
Gunshop, Well, I will think about that, Something rubs me the wrong way with all the paperwork I would have to do to retrieve them.....
Thank you for your suggestions, I have to figure something out soon!

Peter, you can drop them off in our house. We have a big garage, ADT and some other good stuff ;)

Well, I would go with the bank first. As 2nd option you can ask a "secure storage" place on "how secure" they really are.

You might wanna also ask your local PD or a Museum.
I don't know if they would do something like that...?!

Drop them off at your gunsmith for 'cleaning'.

There is no Federal form to fill out to receive your guns back from the gunsmith....they will be stored the same as a FFL would too....just my .02

I've stored firearms and ammo in commercial storage facilities for literally years without problems - aside from rust. Didn't tell anyone what I was storing, put things in wrapped up amidst boxes of toys. Never an issue. I had close to 50 guns in storage during our last PCS move.

If there is someone you trust, wrap them up in newspaper, put a bit of oil on the paper, and pile them up in the corner.
