Never getting another dog..

The longest we have been without a dog in the last 40 years is two weeks. That was after we lost my Dad's baby "Sandy" and he said he did not want another dog. Two weeks later we had brother and sister cocker pups running around the house.

Thanks for all the kind words! So much to say to each one of you! I came home from work today and was greeted with sloppy kisses, a wagging tail and some excitement pee on the floor. I forgot how much I missed that.

We'll , we leave for vacation in a week, going to the beach and we had already rented a "No Pets" cottage back in March. Our family has unanimously agreed to risk it and take Dakota, no one can bear the thought of boarding her, poor dog will probably think she's going back a 4th time. So what if we get kicked out, cant wait :D

Dogs are miracles with paws.
A dog's nose in the palm of your hand is a cure for almost anything
Let your dog take YOU for a walk
Dogs have no secrets
Dogs a like vanilla ice cream' reliably delicious
Dogs are wise agents directly from heaven
I you had a tail, wouldn't you wag it?
Be your dog's best friend
Dogs like dancing, dreaming, and drive-in movies
Some dogs are nap dogs
Dogs are party animals
Apply dog logic to life: eat well, be loved, be petted, sleep a lot, dream of a leash-free world.
Dogs invented unconditional love.

Man, I'm all choked-up. Teardrops on my keyboard!

Pardon me a second whilst I get it back together.......................

....................................................................................

That is a BEAUTIFUL dog! Family too by-the-way.

Yeah Me too. I hate these stories cause My keyboard shorts out. Good job on that rescue, and thanks.

We have Basset Hounds. They have all been rescued through a group that we have been members of for over 10 years now. They have all had a sad story in their background.

We have to say goodbye to a few over the years. But, I would not trade a minute of our lives together as a family for anything.

Kudos for adopting!! Dakota is gorgeous!!

They say that when a dog lays down on his back with his forelegs bent is a sign that he or she feels secure in where he or she is. Our North American pit bull terrier is just such a dog all 95 pounds of him. He'll lay on the couch flat on his back front legs bent and rear legs spread apart. Just wait until he starts snoring. And farts like no ones business don't hear anything but stinks to high heaven. Deathly afraid of thunderstorms so if no one else is home I end up with a 95 pound quivering mass of dog on my lap. Still wouldn't trade him in for anything. When we got him folks were telling all sorts of stories about pit bulls. We've had other dogs here in the house and cats bob either ignores them or goes into his kissy face mode. Ever see a large dog rubbing faces with a cat??. Frank

There must be something to that.

Our big goof is "not allowed" on the couch.
You can see that rule is taken seriously.

He's not supposed to be in that chair, either.

You can see that the furniture rules don't mean much, and apparently he feels quite secure. :D

HillBilly77, seems your dog does the same as mine. Although with him crammed into the chair like that is something I've never seen. Bob likes the couch of death as I call the couch in the living room. Cushions are so soft he sinks into them and laugh when he tries get himself outta the cushions. Frank

That dog's face is priceless!!!:D:D:D It says "What have I gotten myself into? My street cred is blown".

Nope, that Dog's face says "Pops, you're totally *******!!! There's no way you could throw me out even if you wanted to!!" :)

Gorgeous pup and kids!!!!!

Good thread, I need a thread like this to get choked up once in awhile. I have lost count of the number of dogs I have had over the years. Some were great some were difficult, never had one that wasn't loved and missed when they passed. Hopefully there will be one by my side when it is my time,

Walt

I Feel Your Loss/ Me Too

I just wanted to share another dog rescue. I know Paladin had just recently posted an fantastic rescue story and I wanted to also share something similar that happened to me and my family recently.

I lost my black border collie mix in 2016. I buried her in my back yard after 13 years of wonderful devotion. She was our first "child" that me and my then girlfriend now wife adopted in 2003. We got married in 2004 and of course began our two legged family. Brandy ( Collie) was there every step of the way helping raise and protect her two legged family members. When she passed, we wrapped her in a blanket and brought her home from the vet to be buried the next day. My middle child and I just lost it that night and stayed with her body until the next day when I had to begin digging a grave, not fun.

I said we are never getting another dog after that. Its too hard losing them and I'm not going thru this every 10~15 years. I told the kids you can do whatever you want when you're on your own.

Here are some old images I dug out of my DVD vault of Brandy when she was a pup in 2003.

SO fast forward two years later to June this year. My wife said she and the kids wanted another dog and they were not putting up with my selfish **** anymore. Her friend started sending various images of local dogs for adoption and one was at our local SPCA. I said NO, not doing it, end of story.

On my way home June 16, I don't know why but I was passing the SPCA and something made me pull into the parking lot.

24 hours later...What the heck, lost my fight with the wife and kids but couldn't be happier!! Here is Dakota, returned 3 times to the SPCA by her previous owners for "not fulfilling expectations". She's a 1 year old Great Pyrenees mix that is not going back.

Thanks for reading!
I feel your loss. Lost my Vizsla (Missy) two years ago the 15th
of this month. Still grieving.... I'll be celebrating my 87th in two months. Too old and would outlive another Vizsla. They can suffer from a broken heart and a loss too. So, Missy was my last but her paw prints are still on my heart.
Stay safe

My sister had one named Lazlo. We were always getting pictures of his antics. What an adorable nut. He was a champion, too, and when he wasn't doing something silly he'd go to the middle of the yard and strike his 'champion' pose. My Sis in Law had a Thoroughbred horse that did the same thing. He was like a huge dog.

Anyway, after reviewing the pics on this thread, I have one thing to say:

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!:):):)

He's just cooling his "nuggets" in the breeze.

With two exceptions all of our dogs over the last 30 plus years have been rescue dogs. You don't choose them, they choose you.

Both of our current dogs do the "lie on the back with the legs spread" trick.

Georgia is a poodle/Japanese Chin cross. She is 8 1/2. Her original owners moved to Australia and left her with neighbours until they could have her shipped over. It never happened and the neighbours already had two dogs, cats and three children. That was 7 years ago and her favourite human is my stepson.

Beau, a Bichon possibly crossed, was originally the dog of a young woman who went to Australia on holiday and left him with her elderly mother. The young lady never returned from holiday. When he was 18 months old in Feb '15 the mother couldn't look after him any more and she had him picked up by the pound. From the moment the animal control officer opened the pen door so I could see him he pressed his overlong and bodily function stained coat against my leg and hasn't moved around since. I am his human and his favourite place is to put his butt on my shoulder and lie across the back of my chair.

When we lost our purebred Bichon in late 2014 I wanted to immediately replace him with a Bichon/Poodle cross at a pet shop. Karen had just been diagnosed with COPD and was on oxygen 16 hours a day. Having a new pup with an oxygen line all over the house was not an option but my mother-in-law bought him and named him Jack. Karen is his favourite human. One day we will probably inherit him too.

And I have already been told that any future dogs will be rescue dogs.

As hard as it is losing a dog who is all companion, friend, sweetheart, guard, and all around joy, ......
The best thing one can do is to find another who can start the process all over again .... as difficult as it is to do. You are really saving 2 lives...and it's the toughest thing ever that you will ever be happiest doing for the rest of your days.
