Have a friend with the luck of the Irish sometimes. Was "pawn-shopping" and found a 28-2 in near new shape with a barely a rub around the muzzle. N536XXX. No cylinder-ring or scratches. A barely noticable scrape on the right S&W wood grip. No cylinder waggle, no rattles when shaken. Guy paid $500 out the door. No way to post pictures. Sorry. Looks almost new, but no box. Did he do good, or pay too much? My guess is, a bit high but not too much for what it is..
What can you all tell me about this?

That is a good buy and right in the range for what they seem to be going for now as $500 seems to be the prcie if it's not mint but a shooter grade revolver.

Certainly did not get a "deal" at $500, but, if in condition you describe, he did not get hurt either. You did not state barrel length. The 4", in my area, is going for more than the 6". But hey, how can anyone go wrong with a M28-2?

$500 decent to me. I bought a NIB 4 inch two weeks ago in New England for $575. A little pricey, but I wanted a 4 inch NIB.

$500 is right in the ball park.

Without a doubt; the Highway Patrolman Model 28s, right now, are the best buy in Smith & Wesson N frames.

That would be a buy in my area. Not a steal, but a good deal, especially if it has a 4" barrel.

Many of these saw service that involved holster duty, so he might want to closely examine it for signs of a refinish. Not that a refinish is the end of the world, but it would probably lower resale value.
