I took my new 4" model 586 to the range yesterday. Absolutely flawless, a 3 1/2" group at 15 yards, very smooth shooter! American Eagle 158 grain JSP, these rounds have always done well for me. During the ammo drought I wasn't picky so whatever was available I bought, I will see how other brands work.

You could do a whole lot worse than a good old 586.

Bought my 6" M586 back in 1983 when I balked at the price of a new Python ($440). The S&W was $273 at the time and so I bought what I thought was a poor mans Python at the time..

Over the years I have come to realize it is a strong, well made and accurate revolver that will probably outlast the Python's more fragile action.

My experience mirrors yours chief. Poor man's Python indeed. Over the long haul the S&W is the more durable of the two.

Pictures or it didn't happen Oracle! Seriously I would love to happen upon a nice 586. They are sort of hard to come by in my area. Enjoy!

I will get some photos and again once I have replaced the grips. I put Badger Grips Macassar Ebony grips on my S&W wheel guns.

I'm definitely a fan of the 4" - 586 (and 686)! Fits my hands perfectly and shoots great. It's almost my favorite .357 (my fav is an old beater 5" pre-27).

My favorite 586 is the 6 inch. I think they balance better for me and the sights line up quicker. I also like the patridge front sight when I can find them.

Spin132: Please tell us about the grips on your revolver. They are spectacular!
Thanks for the kind words Krogen! They were made by John Culina. The invoice states: Exhibition Grade Highly Figured Black Walnut (sounds pretty fancy right!). Like a few other grip guru's on this forum, John is a true artisan. I also purchased these combats from the same lot of wood.

Thanks, spin132. Those are quite possibly the two nicest pieces of wood I've laid eyes on. The depth of figure on the smooth targets almost looks like the features are cast in molded resin. It's as if you can see into the depths of the wood. Beautiful, just beautiful!

A few years ago I fully intended on getting one of the new pythons , 4.25in.

I had the money saved up, I was ready to go, pandemic was on - and then they were having the teething problems.
And I wanted a blued gun anyway.
Instead I ended up with a 586 - and while I think the pythons are neat, that itch is scratched.

I brought a newbie for their first time at the range. .38 special in a 586 and they were hooked!
