Picked up a new 442 Pro today. It's the moon clip model, but now nicely branded "Pro Series". Trigger is what it is...still feels like a 442/642...maybe a bit better than the regular no lock. Regardless, shot it tonight and all is well so far! :D

I've already posted on JohnRippert's thread on this model. S&W really has my number: they keep issuing new Centennial variants and I keep buying them. Never recovered from seeing my 1st 442 in the mid 90s. Neither did the other LEOs who saw it in the showcase. It's a terrible affliction, isn't it?

P.S. BTW, thanks to JohnRippert for providing the SKU of this model. Here we go again...!

Remember that Pro series gun is only the performace center PART. It was still assembled on a normal assembly line and not "touched" by a performance center smith. So it'll only feel slightly better than a normal 442.

You may be right, but you never can tell. The 442 Performance Center "Chattanooga" pinto guns of 2015 were a disappointment, IMO. One of mine required 2 repair trips and I still look at it askance. The other one is suitable, but only just. As to a "normal" 442, some have DAs that keep the replacement spring folks in business. Depends really on the individual gun, which is why I don't buy sight unseen.

To the OP: Another thread recently compared the virtues of buying the 442 Pro versus the "regular" 442, and opinions were roughly split. I believe the 442 Pro does not have anything done to its trigger, per se, to make it different from the "regular" 442. The difference seems to be the cylinder and the markings.

The trigger on mine is not bad and is getting better as it breaks in. A light trigger is not something I want in a single-action only self-defense revolver - so I'll wait for mine to get smoother with use, rather than going with a trigger job or a lighter spring. Overall, these are great revolvers and the moonclip can be a real plus. The classic 148 grain wad cutters that most of the major ammo companies market tend to be mild shooting, even in an Airweight like the 442 Pro.

I got mine last weekend and have been putting in around 100 "rounds" a night of dry fire practice. May just be the extra exercise but the trigger feels better to me than when I first got it.

I think it's a little of both. Though I will say, of the two 442 moon clips I have, this trigger is the most "average"...but I like the gun nonetheless. To confuse things even more, I have a recent production 642 no lock that has a trigger out of the box which rivals my LCR. I guess it just depends...

Very true. For pocket carry (or any carry of a J frame really), I prefer the trigger as is. It's a fine revolver as designed, no question!

Can you fire the 442 pro without moon clips?

I bought the M442 without the lock the first week it was available years ago. I'm very hooked on these J frames and like said above, they are extremely addictive!

With or without :-) You need one!

I have both the 642 IL and 642 PRO no-lock and honestly can tell any difference in trigger pull. Aesthetically they appear identical save for the IL on one, and the Moon clip recess on the other.

Personally I like the idea of Moon clips, but then, how often am I going to carry a spare Moon clip? Not very often considering their bulk. I do like the fact that when empty, all shells come out "en bloc" which is pretty solid. Probably be easier to just carry both revolvers rather than worry about a reload situation.
