So I just bought a NIB 442 with no lock where how did this happen? The spent shell casing says 5-14-10.

Smith does make new 442s and 642s that lack the internal lock. That was actually a big selling point for me when I was shopping for a J-frame... I get the feeling that resale value on these in the future will be better than the normal lock models.

Might be some other Smiths without internal locks. Anyone know of any others?

Is it marked 442-1 or 442-2? Is it cut for moon clips? Where are you located?

It is a 442-2 I don't know what the cut out for moonclips looks like but my guess is now the little dealer I bought it from ha another one with no lock satin? Finished for almost 100 more I got a deal cause im a good customer. I don't like the il so it was the gun for me. I'm in the Dfw metroplex btw

I bought a new model 442 about a year ago and mine doesn't have a lock. I snapped it up as fast as possible. I didn't know that they were making any without a lock.

I called SW cust svc yesterday and they said they are NOT making any no lock 442, now im really confused?
I live in South Florida and want a 642 or 442 no internal lock.
which would u guys recommend?
thanks

According to the latest catalog which you can download off of S&W"s Web site, they are supposed to also make a no lock Model 640 in .357Magnum with night sights. I think they are also going to make a Model 672.

The classic Models 40 and 42 "lemon squeezers" have been available for some time now without the lock.

I just picked up a 442 for myself and a 642 for my wife. Can't find a -# on either gun or case but the 442 has a lock and the 642 does not; both came with the keys though.

i bought a no lock 442-2 from a fourm menber back in july,....love the gun he had a thread going for a while.....selling 442's and 642's...no lock.....AR_black....if i remember right....do a search.

AR_black has a post on this sight right now.....just saw it.....no association with him.....but i thought i got a good deal....fyi

I've had a 442-1 (Pro-series) relieved for moonclips, no lock for a couple months now.
Loose Rounds = ok.
Speed / Quik Strips = ok.
Speedloaders (HKS 36-A) = snug, but ok.
Moonclips = NoGo. Best ammo I've found so far has been Remingtons with the soft lead SWC HP (FBI load), but even those have been... difficult. They ride high enough that the drag on the frame makes a hard trigger pull almost impossible. With Double-Tap, Fiocchi, and Speer Gold Dots, I can't even get the cylinder to close.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I love my 442 no-lock, but the moonclip option (at least so far) has not had ANY impact on me whatsoever.
