Hi - I've recently been bitten by the 3rd gen S&W bug. I've picked up a couple locally off Armslist which I consider lucky finds simply due to the fact they're local and I could check them out first.

The 4506-1 was a second owner gun. Father to son. It came with original box and chamber flag. 7 magazines, and a very nice IWB leather holster and matching double mag pouch. Also came with about 400 rounds of various ammo and Houge/original grips.

I paid 500.00 for it. 50.00 more than I wanted but I justified that with the holster, ammo, and extra mags. Thing was dirty as hell, but cleaned up nicely. A minor amount of holster wear that will clean up nicely. Oh ya, had an extra recoil spring that appears new. I won't use it now since the gun is kicking the shells out 6-8' on the spot.

The 1006 was a second owner gun as well. The guy I got it from had it for 15 years. It too came with chamber flag and box, 3 magazines, and 200 rounds of ammo. Almost 100%. This gun is very clean in and out. Paid 900.00 for it. Ouch.

Great thing is the 1006 fits nicely in the IWB leather holster that came with the 4506 so when I take this thing in woods I've got a nice solid carry piece.

A couple of questions.

1) the 4506-1 - it has the clicking trigger. I've read about the eraser fix. Is this considered 'ghetto' or 'acceptable'? Seems like a ghetto fix to me, and I prefer to do it right. What parts are needed to properly correct the issue?

2) the 1006 decocker has a bit of a gritty feel to it. Anyone experience this and if so is there a fix?

Here's a picture of them both

I have a 4506 that was my issued carry weapon. It has only 50 rounds through it, and the trigger doesn't click. It was given to me when I retired. Wish I could help you

I recently purchased a 4506 no dash, it had the trigger click.
I was not comfortable with the bending of the trigger play spring but it sounds like a lot of people do it.
If your friend jumps off a bridge, should you do it?

If you want to replace it you will need to buy a trigger play spring and a new rivet, I also suggest buying a Wolf spring pak and replace all the springs while you have it disassembled.
The job is not difficult, just take your time and get it right.

The 1006 was not a bad price-- condition depending of course, but figure you got one (arguably two) more mags than "market price" and you paid at the high end of market price. For what the mags are going for, you got a solid deal.

The 4506 on the other hand was an absolute steal. These days, an older 4506 with use & 1 mag can garner $500 but you got a dash-1, 7 mags, holster, and a load of ammo. That is a colossal deal.

An issued carry gun with only 50 rounds through it? Couldn't have been carried for long......must be in really nice condition. Congrats!

We went from 645 to the 4506. I would say I carried it less than 5 months before I retired and it was given to me. We went to range quarterly, and I had been once with this pistol. It looks new, I take very good care of a weapon which my life depended on. I have two black follower magazines which came with the pistol. I have 4 others, two with orange followers, two with yellow ones. We carried two extra magazines, so two of the yellow or orange follower magazines were carried on the duty belt. I bought two others at a good price along the way. Any idea what 4506 magazines are worth? I don't need this many now.

Last I checked, Midway had new 4506 mags for $35. Ebay might have some for a little cheaper, or at least free shipping.
And, I concur, the OP made out like a bandit !! Don't avoid the "ghetto fix", it may well fix it , and the worst that can happen is you just break off the spring, still have the click, and still have to replace it. Ain't really a down side to giving it a shot.
I know Brownells currently has the spring and the required rivet in stock, but they annoyingly jack you for $8 bucks on shipping, for what they can ship with a .49 stamp or two.

The click issue is caused by the trigger play spring. Replacements are readily available from the usual sources: Brownells, Midway, Numrich... A search here on the Forum will tell you all you need to know about the issue and how to resolve it. Read the comments by Fastbolt in this thread for a start:

Thank you! Will do....

Well your bridge analogy is a little different. That would result in certain death or severe injury, unless it was a very short cliff. haha.

I was just trying to figure out if the eraser fix was considered acceptable, or half a**.

I can take a part anything, and re-assemble so that part doesn't bother me. However, if I'm going to do that I start to wonder what else I should do to make this pistol even better. :D Even though they are mostly for the safe.

That makes me feel better. It's actually how I justified the purchase, all the accessories and ammo.

The 1006 is in pretty darn good shape. I'm really debating if it's even worth taking the SB pads to it. It has a couple scrapes, but they're the kind you have to hold just the right way so the light shows them. No holster wear or anything like that.

I am not a fan of IWB carry, but even so - a 1006 IWB?

Right?? This IWB holster is huge! I'll post a picture. The only time I'll EVER use it is when hiking, in the summer, with my cargo shorts on. And only then because any other form of carry may cause unwanted attention from others.

Drool. That is one SWEET load of pistols and accessories for 1400 bucks.

Thanks. I can't quit starting at them. Every time I open the safe it's a 10-15 minute ordeal because I have to admire the new toys.

I'll be looking into the fix. I did have a chance to fix shoot the 4506 and it's not even noticeable then.

I hate when I buy a 3.00 part and pay 10.00 shipping.

I have more on the way - 2 x 5906 and 1x 3913. I'll throw them up when they arrive.

Thanks again, all, for the comments.

A good use for "too many" 4506 magazines would be for you to throw a trade flier up on the forum. Offer some manner of a swap where you send out x number of 4506 mags and in return you get some 59xx or 39xx mags in return.

That is an EXCELLENT idea. And, I should have thought about that before I spent 25.00 each for extra 5906 magazines. Damn....

The trigger click is nothing but a pain in the butt, BUT it has nothing to do with functioning. In fact the California Highway Patrol removes the spring from their guns to remove the possiblity of it breaking and tying up the gun.

Also on the 4506 second spring, DO not use that spring with ball or HP duty ammo. Its a lightweight target only spring. Some ahole gunshop clerks would tell people to put the lightweight spring in to break the gun in. Problem was most people would just leave it in and after 500 rounds the gun would beat itself to death.

I haven't really dug into these S&Ws yet so forgive me if this is a dumb question. How does completely removing the spring affect the gun?

And... .thanks a million for mentioning that second spring. I would have kept it thinking it was good to go as a replacement, not a substitute.

From a functional standpoint removing the spring means your sear does not have the constant tension and the result is the "click" and slop in the trigger. BUT that has no impact whatsoever on the function of the gun.

On the other hand if the spring were to break off when firing then the parts would float around inside the trigger mechanism and possibly tie the gun up, NOT a good thing on a police duty weapon.
