Just got a 500 mag in 4 inch bbl length and a box of 350 gr Hornady xtp.Am going out tomorrow to warm it up.From what i read, every one that has one loves it.I'm a sucker for muzzle blast and heavy recoil, and to scare the guy next to me at the range is fun too!

Next to me at the range Friday was a shooter with a 500, but with a six inch barrel. Sure glad I was wearing my Peltor ear muffs. He was using a scope and was having trouble keeping the screws tight even with Loc Tite.

Well, just to be a good neighbor I hope you warn the guy in the next lane that he might like to move a couple of stations away before you light one off.

X-frames are definitely guns of much appeal. I have the same one you have -- four inch 500 -- and a 460XVR as well. If you really want the recoil experience, dump the huge rubber handle and just put some wooden magnas on the gun. Or even leave stocks off entirely and wrap the grip with friction tape to give yourself something most people can almost hang on to. With a reduced grip the four inch 500 approaches concealed-carry status. :D

Until today I would have recommended that you look at WWW.BALLISTICSUPPLY.NET for a variety of loads for the .500 Magnum. Unfortunately they have just suspended operations until further notice. I sure hope they make it back. They had great loads at reasonable prices.

Great guns, I've owned four .500s, have two currently. While you give up a noticeable amount of velocity with that short barrel, the gun has an excellent balance/feel to it.

To really enjoy these guns you have to reload unless you're independently wealthy or enjoy incinerating your wallet. Don

i've also got the same gun and i have changed the factory grips to wood to simplify carry for personal defense. i always warn my fellow shooters, at the range, of the impending BOOM associated with this gun. most of the time they don't just move down, they back up too. because of the costs associated with factory loaded ammo, $2-$3 per round, reloading for the 500 is a must, IMNOTSOHO. do you mind saying what you paid for it?

i paid 1100. prices are still high because of our apologizer in chief.i better not get started on president hussein will lose sanity.

I carry the 4 incher to the club on purpose. When it's not busy we police ourselves. Sometimes on the rifle range (and it's always on the rifle line) one or two won't give you the common courtesy to stop and let you go forward and place a target. So after waiting a 1/2 hour or so, I seek up to the bench next to him and let loose shooting doubles and triples into the sand bank. After scaring the heck out of him, they always let me go forward.

Concussion is a good thing sometimes!
Yep, the 500 is a great tool to call for a cease fire!:D

Sounds like you have some selfish horses's rears to deal with. Your solution to the issue seems appropriate. Don

nothin' like a little cannon fire to get everyone's attention!!!.....

I own the 4" 500 & the 460 5" and run Hornady SST's through both. 3 years with zero problems. The concussion blast is the best. I had a 400# black bear coming up my deck steps over the weekend. I had enough time to blow a round off 10' over its head from about 25' away. Can you say blown ear drums? Did the same thing with a large grey wolf from about 60' away...never seen again.

I'm disappointed to hear about Ballistic Supply. Their reasonably priced ammo was one of the factors I considered when I decided to buy my Model 500.

Since their website hadn't been updated in months, I figured that they were not in a big hurry to start producing ammo again. It's too bad, because they offered an interesting range of loads at reasonable prices.

Let's hope they get things figured out and up and running again sometime soon.
