Hi, just purchased a 586 4inch. Details:
$ 300.00 (friend sold at a bargain as he is going thru divorce)
Condition: rarely ever fired, less than 2K rounds
early run: AAA 30XX w/ mod stamp, logo on rt side

I bought the revolver as I've always wanted a revolver. 10 yrs ago I passed on an NIB python for $500 and have never lived it down. But more important to me is that I hunt and fish alone, in cougar country (occasional bear) and on more than one occassion had the 6th sense that something wasn't right i.e felt like I was being stalked in an area where some big cats reside. Nohting but a flyrod for defense. Ocassional moose when in ID. I suppose the 586, less panicking combined with a wll placed shot, would put a cat down if all worked out right. Pray when against Bullwinke. Plus, the gun is just plain fun to shoot.

I put 200 rounds thru it on sunday and must say I love the gun. Perfect balance for me. Hitting paper at 50ft with 60% of shots and at 25ft all good. I can/t see the red ramp site as I'm colored blind with green/red so I felt pretty good about my first time with it.

??First question: Is there a replacement for the red insert on the ramp site in an orangish color? Or evn better some sort of fiber op insert that gathers light? I haven't been able to find an alternative.

Thanks to all the posters on this site for I have learned a tremendous amount about S-W and this particular weapon. I will have lots of questions as I spend more time with this new tool/toy. Happy New Year!

You can replace the insert. Midway and Brownells sell kits that are do it yourself and fairly easy to work with. Hi-Viz makes a fiber optic sight blade that can replace the pinned front sight blade on some Smith and Wesson revolvers. Check to make sure it will work on you gun without destroying the factory sight. I bought a used 617 that came with the F/O sight installed. My first thought was to replace it with the factory sight that was still with the gun, until I tried it. It was a pleasure to shoot the gun at my dimly lit indoor range. BTW, $300 bucks? Does he have any others to get rid of???? Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure but I would think one that early should have had the partridge site instead of the red ramp. Maybe someone replaced the original.

Great choice for a first revolver. Make sure to properly care for and maintain it and it will outlast you. You already sound knowledgeable about it if you knew to look for the "M" stamp. I don't particularly care for the wood grips.....I prefer the rubber grips from Hogue or Pachmayer to help moderate recoil. That's just my preference. I own a 586, a 681, and a 686. All have been quite enjoyable. You got a really good deal on yours. Now you have more money to spend on ammunition..... go shoot that thing!!!!
