NEW 629 and 686 NO LOCK MOUNTAIN GUNS ANNOUNCED!

Iirc the internals changed with the introduction of the lockwork my guess has been thats why they needed to change the frame shape to make room for the lock hole.

If I'm wrong and the hammer trigger etc from a 629-5 Mg is exactly the same ( except in case color) in theory they could stamp it a 629-5 but thats only a theory.

They can't with the 686 because of the new ball detent alone.

perhaps. though I do have a performance center 629 that has the ball detent and is marked 629-6.

You are a sample size of one. There have been complaints on this very forum. Anyone interested can feel free to search for themselves.

Here is a thread that directly examines the issue.

Hopefully whoever started that thread sent their revolver back to Smith & Wesson for warranty work since they should not be having problems. Perhaps they did. I may look through your link later when I have time.

I have a couple of questions about these. In the video, some of the guns have a white outline rear sight and some have a black rear sight. Do you think we will have a choice? The MSRP is $1199. What would you expect the "real" price to be for us? Are they usually discounted any? Thanks, in advance for any information.

Everybody, me included is doing backflips right now. But you stop and think about it…… how much money did S&W save by deleting the lock? It's anybody's guess. Let's just pretend $20. That's pure profit. Any way you look at it, deleting the lock was a good choice.

I think the value of the "Lock Models" just plummeted.

Smith is back in the game.

Is the contour of the frame on the N frame correct/ original. Looks like it to me. But I've been wrong before.

I suspect it is not a cost savings by deletion of the lock mechanism, I think they are charging more due to the new (and so far, lower volume) production processes of making K/L/N frames without the lock.

My impression is the N frame was big enough to accommodate the IL without changing the frame. J and K frames were definitely bigger because of it, not sure about the L.

New release videos usually have prototype examples; hard to know if actual inventory will ship with white outline or plain black, but I doubt there'll be a choice -- two separate SKUs and the attendant work associated probably makes it prohibitive...so, wait and see.

Street price on average tends to run 5%-10% below MSRP, but expect early demand to push prices above that, then when the new hotness subsides MSRP for a while, and finally down the road the usual street price percentage below MSRP.

They may be available with either rear sight "slide".

As far as gun store prices, rest assured the first ones will be at or above MSRP. In 6-12 months we'll see the street prices settle out, like the then-new Colt Pythons from a few years ago.

So, the the 629 MG 14041 is supposed to start shipping from S&W 1st week of Feb, and the 686 MG 14040 is supposed to start shipping a couple weeks later. This is according the my LGS's rep at Lipsey's who was told this by Smith. Lipsey's has not received firm dates yet. This info in 15min old at time of posting here. I put my name down for one of each, of course. Still dabbling with the idea of 2x'ing the 686.

I have wanted a 686-5 mountain gun since I learned of their existence 20 years ago. I have placed my order for a new one and would like to convey my thanks to Lipseys and Smith and Wesson.

Problem here is, you can't just buy one. Hopefully, they'll keep them coming. I'd like a 44 spl please.

perhaps. though I do have a performance center 629 that has the ball detent and is marked 629-6.

My SCSW3 ends with the 629-6 which denotes it as 3 variations of "Trail Boss" but no mention of a ball detent lock so not sure of the variations of 629-6 or if some have the ball detent and some do not or if SW issued a revision change for that specificly or for the iL as well as the ball detent covering both under 1 revision.

Your thread is also a sample size of one, and an issue that would be ALL OVER the forum if widespread.

Just look how people like to complain; if someone is already complaining of an issue that hasn't happened yet, don't you think there would be six pages of threads on this already if it was real?

anyone else look at those photos and realize they have different triggers? my 629-6 has that "stamped" sheet metal trigger, these have very nice looking polished stainless triggers...

does that mean we could hope for more interesting materials inside the lockwork?

Show pics of ya "Stamped sheet metal trigger".......You may have a one off.

A return to desirable, proven designs are one thing. Building them correctly is another altogether. We'll see I guess.

I believe the triggers and hammers are chrome flashed MIM parts. I have never had a problem with a MIM part.
