New 642's without lock

I also haven't gotten a MP340 b/c of the lock.
I'll have to pick one of these 642's now!

In a recent online survey S&W did, they were asking about
all kinds of interesting models. They all sounded nice, but not with the IL.

First thing that came to my mind.

I find the 642PP on Lipsey's site and in Smith's catalog, but I don't see a standard 642 w/o lock anywhere but on the RSR site. I hope RSR's is correct, but the other two are referring to the new 642 with ported, longer barrel and in an overall heavier weight. Can anyone steer me to a product number I can use to give to my dealer? (It appears that Smith is making the 637PP, as well) Thanks!!

Catalog # is 103810 for the Non-IL model.

Sounds like guys are lining up to buy one just because it doesn't have a lock. Personally, I don't want a 642 with or without the IL. Each to his own.

Goes for everyone.

Very nice. So much for the lock apologists saying that S&W "can't" make new non-lock guns because of the supposedly massive retooling.
As with almost all things, money talks!

Good. It'll make it that much easier for me to get one.

This is supposed to be the product code, but can anybody advise the distributor?

This could be the thin end of the wedge. Perhaps more runs of proper no-lock models will be forthcoming.

We may all be sitting around on the Forum in a year or two together laughing about the bad ol' "lock" days. Or else scrambling to search for that "rare and collectible" lock version of the Model 642.

It's just a ploy from the powers that be to "make the month" in any way they can.

Things are probably a bit slow, like the rest of the country...so they do anything they can quickly to do it.

I smell greed.

And that is the American Way

There are still a few upright citizens out there...I always think several times if the decisions I have made are "right."

Oh well. I'm not buying one of these- already have a 40, 40-1, 340, etc. A J-frame is a J-frame, is a J-frame.

Now...an I-frame is a different matter.

Let me peer a little more into my crystal ball-
and see what the future holds for my collection!

I'm not really in the market for a non-lock 642 but I sure hope they sell out in a matter of weeks. That sends about as clear a message to S&W as possible.

I can go to any gun shop, either large or small, in my town on any given day and find an internal lock 642 languishing on the shelf. So, if the new non-lock version sells out then that tells S&W it's not the finish, the size, the trigger pull, or the grip angle that is the problem, it's the lock.

The distributor is RSR and I received an email from them just a few mintues ago confirming that. They don't know when delivery will occur and wouldn't disclose any pricing.

Not trying to be rude, but if you noticed way back in this thread, we discussed all of that information yesterday. But, it is exciting isn't it

RSR pricing is not cheap and being the sole distributor it won't be pretty. The local S&W rep can't take orders. I'll pass on this one, don't need a post lock no lock anyway.

Is it exciting? Some guys currently salivating for lock-free guns had better take a look in their safes. The inflated value of all those revolvers sitting there is due largely to the fact that S&W isn't making them without locks anymore. That cherry prelock 686 sitting there will drop a couple hundred bucks if new ones become available. Some of the guys who believe nothing good has happened since Dwight Eisenhower left office might be convinced to try a new gun. If they do, they'll discover that MIM and frame-mounted firing pins are actually pretty good, and that S&W is building guns better than they used to build them. Stranger things have happened. I think.

On the other side of the coin, some guys who purchased high priced, Safety Wesson wind up revolvers, and convinced themselves that the lock is not an issue, will be stuck with them.

My pre lock revolvers will never be worth less, and if what I see in the local gun shops holds, the IL revolvers won't be worth more.
I'm "salivating" for more lock free revolvers, to keep the wear and tear off my nice pre locks.

Evidently S&W must want money, and is willing to produce what us "purists" want, to get it.

Do any of you "the lock is here to stay" crowd want some salt for that crow?

The pricing structure that RSR lists for the 642 is the manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP). The actual price of the gun is sold at wholesale to FFL dealers, this wholesale price is significantly lower than what you see listed on their site. Usually a dealer will purchase at wholesale and mark up the item with his base percentage. So the price of the non-lock model should be close to if not the same as the lock models on the shelf already. It usually takes a few months for an item to hit shelves after it's announced by a manufacturer so it practically could be the fall before you begin to see them. Just a little insight for those interested.
