Does anyone know if there are any variations of the new model 66's in the works? IE a 2.5 or 3" version or if they are just planning on the 4" version? Would love a new style 66 in a 3" or 2.5" barrel. I enjoy my 19-3 2.5", but would prefer something in stainless (carry gun sometimes) and with the stronger barrel/forcing cone arrangement, so I have been using my 686+ 3" lately. Debating selling the 19-3 to purchase another 686+ 3", but I like the lighter weight of the 19.

Would think S&W would wait to see sales figures for the present 4" before they would branch out into other barrel lengths. Perhaps some of the controversy over the lock-up of the Model 69 would spill over to the 66, but that is speculation on my part. The 4" Models 619 and 620 didn't fly several years ago, so that also may color the opinion of the factory.

It does not help that the 686 with its many variations seems to occupy the place in the line-up that the 19/66 occupied in the past.

New Mod 66

The info abounded here that the 4.25"barrel was to suit import regs in Canada. OK...good...and it`s the most popular barrel length for the the US also(4.00"=4.25 for the purpose of this conversation). I would think that once that well runs dry that S&W would look around and say "Hmmmm, what else can we do to stimulate sales ?" I think the obvious move is a variety of barrel lengths...2.5/3.0 and 6.0 also. I vote(even though I don`t get one) for the 3 incher also. John

During a sales time when CCW is at an all time high I cannot fathom why they didn't from day one offer the old snub version of the 66.
My guess is that the powerhouse J-frame sales and relative fizzle of the Night Guard series leads S&W to believe (perhaps correctly) that there isn't enough demand for larger personal defense/carry wheel guns.

The NG's price point is what killed them off.

The 686 in 2.5" and 3" move fast if you can even find one.

Yeah, I have a 3" 686+ :) The K frame is a noticeable bit lighter, hence why I was wondering if they realize the popularity of the 3" barrel. 3" new 66 would make a great CCW piece! Stronger than the orig K frame, better lock up, no forcing cone issues, etc and a little lighter weight than the 686 series.

Good points. And while many 2.5" and 3" 686s are being sold, (I know I'm starting something here), I question how many of them are being carried 24/7, rather than just to the LGS or range on the weekend.

P.S. There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that "Hapworth" and "Kaaskop49" are the same poster, We do, however, split our tips at the end of our shift...

21/2" would be cool. But, now that they're making .357 Mag K Frames; How about a 3" Model 65?

I would be absolutely shocked if they made any variations of the 66 at this point. I know a bunch of us on the forum are really hot for 2.5 & 3" variations, but S&W caters to the masses. The masses just aren't carrying 3+ lb 6-shot revolvers for defense these days.

I was just thinking this a few hours ago. There should be a Lew Horton 3" or PC 2.5", or standard 2.5/3" any time now I'd imagine.
