Hi. New to the forum, and thought I'd introduce myself and the new revolver. Just picked up a 2 1/2" 686 in 38. I had a model 66 and a model 38 airweight that I let go, and have regretted both ever since. I guess I am a revolver guy at heart. This is my latest, but not last S&W revolver. Don't have it in my hands yet, but it has been shipped! Plan to use it as an occasional carry gun and shoot a few USPSA matches with it.

Nice 686. I plan on getting me a 4inch 357 for carry. I love the power of the round. Enjoy your new revolver and welcome to the forum

Very nice. I just picked up a 2.5" round butt in .357, now to find some grips. I think I'll try the S&W boot grips.

I just purchased my 1st handgun 2 weeks ago and decided on the 686P with 4" barrel. I love the craftsmanship and quality, and especially the feel of the gun. I plan on passing down to my unborn kids and grandkids. Going to look at the Bodyguard 380 after work tonight. Plan to use that as an everyday carry if it agrees with me. From one forum newbor to another, welcome!!!

Yeah Bulletproof you are. Smith comes out with a run of them all the time. They have various barrel lengths and etc. I have see a couple of them now.

nice revolver... welcome back to wheel guns

Great looking piece!

Why would you get one of those in .38Sp? That is a pretty beefy revolver for shooting only .38!

Tom

Just because it was something different. I plan to pick up a 4" 686 in 357 at some point as well.

Picked up the new revolver last night. Unfortunately, it was too dark to do any shooting, but hopefully tonight! One interesting note...the chambers appear to be cut to .357 dimensions. When loaded with empty 38 special brass, there is a slight gap between the leading edge of the brass and the ring in the chamber. Empty 357 brass and 158 grain 357 loads drop right in. My guess is the only real change is the marking on the barrel. S&W probably just used the normal 686 cylinders on this particular run. Range report to follow. (Using 38s. I have no intention of firing .357s in the gun)

Colt made a "Python Target Model" which was chambered for .38 Special ONLY. It was issued with an 8" barrel, in both Blue and Nickel finishes. The purpose of this revolver is obvious. The purpose of a 2 1/2" Distinguished Combat Magnum (686) is dubious at best.......
