Bummer, I hate when that happens. Considering it was a new gun I'd expect it to be flawless. I had a similard bad experience with a new Smith once... I also didn't notice it till I got home and really went over it. I've learned my lesson and now really go over any guns I buy.
That, and the one I had a bad experience with should have never left the factory. Although, you've got noting to worry about they'll make it right, and in your case considering the frame is cracked you'll end up with a new replacement gun. Just look it over real good, I suspect they may have over torques the barrel to cause the crack.

That sucks. Keep us posted on what the outcome is. Since it looks like it will be making a trip back home anyway, is your barrel off center? Alot of 686's are shipped with the barrel canted to the left. May be worth another look and get both fixed at the same time.

Bummer. Hope they make it right for you. I have a 686 6" and shot it in a Police Pistol Combat League. Super accurate gun. No one will pry that away from me. Good luck.

It's the dreaded over-torquing of the barrel frame crack, at its thinnest part. S & W will definitely make this right.

Well I called last night.

Talk to a csr about the cracked frame and they emailing me a return label.Said should take up to two days to get it.

I asked how this would be handled. He told me they would just remove all the parts and install them on a new frame.

So gun would have to be shipped to me thu an FFL since number well be different on return trip. Said they would reimburse me for FFL charge.

When I write the letter that goes with gun to factory Im going to put they check the barrel crown also cause it looks uneven. Thicker on one side than the other.

As far as the barrel being off to one side from over-tightening if was a tad but ive seen worse on utube videos. Hopefully when they refit to new frame that doesnt become an issue when gun comes back.

I also ordered a set of grips from Gungripsupply.com that came with a crack in them too.Replacements were 4 to 6 weeks cause they were out of stock.

Man wheres the quality and pride when something is made anymore.

Welcome to the forum from North Dakota. Unfortunately, flaws like that occur, however infrequently, to even the highest quality handguns. And I appreciate the finest quality, that's why I own and shoot S&W revolvers and Kahr ( IMO the highest quality semi-autos)semi-autos. Last year took delivery of a PM9 Kahr, and while performing the prep for required "kahr break in routine" noticed a crack on the edge of the slide. So it can happen. Good luck--S&W will take care of you.

Welcome to the forum!

That's a nice 3" 686 too, except for the additional "feature" of a crack.

Not to worry. I just got my 642 back. My only suggestion; don't get in a hurry. They are really backed up.

Smith & Wesson still has pride in their products.
That's why they offer a Full Lifetime Warranty on their products.

I have dealt with S&W Customer Service a few times, and I have had great luck with them. I guarantee that they will make it right with your gun.

Well Fed-x just picked up the gun.

Ill update this post once I find out something new from S&W.

Now the waiting begins...

Cracked

Had a friend who bought a Ruger Security Six brand new. We took it to the range and loaded her up and began to shoot it.. 2nd round foot lower than first.. 3 round another foot lower than 2nd.. 4th round barrel fell off.. Same problem... Good luck on yours..
