So after waiting a couple of weeks for the bureaucrats to get my paperwork out to me this week I was finally able to make a little time to slip out and collect the 686 I bought nearly a month ago...well sort of anyway.... :D :D

What I had paid for was a 686-3 with a four position adjustable front sight. It was in better than average condition with all issues being purely cosmetic. Fining a -3 or earlier 686 had been a bit of a quest for me as all the ones I had examined were pigs. The adjustable front sight was a bit of a compromise to for me to get a 686 of the vintage I wanted but one I could live with.

So I land at the counter with paperwork and case in hand and talk to the handgun guy, he does know his S&Ws and previously he and I had only spoke on the phone. He fished out "my" 686 and in passing I asked if in the past couple of weeks any other 6 inch 686s had come into stock...he then recalled I wanted a -3 and said maaaaybe... he then produced a -3 with a red ramp front in what I would describe as around 90% condition. Probably a bit better than the AF model I had paid down on. It was however the same ticketed price. Now they normally charge a 10% fee if you change your mind once you have paid down on something but he went to speak with the boss who's mother happened to be with him at the time, now I have known her for almost 30 years....she is from the Mediterranean so there was much hugging and telling every one what a "great boy I was" (hey....I'm 42)...so I think guilt on the part of her son saved me my 10% fine... :D

I will post a few pics later on, it is basically stock from the factory but the pretty wood grips have been replaced with Hogues.

I have already arranged an action job and bead blasting (shinny guns are too pimp for me) and then getting the red ramp machined off and a black blade installed...all in all I am a happy little camper tonight... :)

Now if someone could give me an approximate birth date on BPH 01** I would really appreciate it .. :)

Don't know the date, but I appreciate your fondness of 686's...I'm right there with you. I prefer mine to be highly polished and love the red ramp front sight...my eyes need all the help they can get. But there's nothing wrong with bead blasted and a black sight either. You did good. Sounds like God was smiling on you through the entire encounter at the gun store. Congratulations and enjoy the new gun...I'll bet it's very accurate and fun to shoot. B

That's a beautiful revolver and it was made in late 1993.

Those are some nice guns Andy.
The four inch handles wonderful, and the longer barrel should be a tackdriver as well.

Congrats Andy,
N Qld here, (but a blues supporter...).

Cheers,

Aussie D

Congrats on your new 686. I got mine (also used but in mint condition) about 2 months ago. My favorite revolver hands down. Enjoy yours!

Here's my 686 (4" barrel)

Andy,
LOL!!! Dam them Canetoads having it over the Cockroaches!!

If there is anything I can get for your 686's, just send us a pm.

Cheers,

Aussie D

Thanks mate, I work in an office full of Cockroach supporters so I had a pretty good day yesterday gloating...!!

I have to chase up a spring kit but that is about it for this one. Getting it looked at late next week just for the once over before I get it bead blasted.

Andy

I love my 686's, nice gun, great decision!
... I have loved L Frame S&Ws since my best friends older brother took possession of one of the first two 586s to come to Australia in the early 80s. I was a teenager and he let me and his brother hunt some bunnies with it (it was on a very unusual category of licence out here) ....I was sold. I had a dalliance with a Python before I could afford a new 686 (the four inch pictured) and have not looked back since. I have been "meaning" to get a 6 inch since about a month after I got the four inch ;)

I will confess that if I could have found a really nice 586 I would have probably grabbed that for the memories... :)

Decided to give it a "little" clean before I take it to my 'smith (who is a mate) and get the lecture...I concluded that the side plate has not been off this thing since the nice folks at S&W tightened the screws. It was chock full of the usual gunk you see in a revolver run pretty much always on lead projectiles. I have no issue with it having not been played with, it means it wont have been screwed with either....and before anyone asks...yes it is back together just as intended....though I did change out the grips and sights while I was at it... :)
