I have a new 686 plus 2.5 inch. First time shooting it discovered it has extreme resistance right before SA hammer locks back. I dry fired these cases to trouble shoot it. The rims are nicked up which is probably the cause of the resistance. What should I do. I really don't want to send it for warranty and wait months for it.

Were those cases beaten up like that before they were cycled through the revolver?

ETA: Those primer indents look massive, too. Were they live primed cases that you cycled through it?

They were once fired cases that I used to dry fire repeatedly to trouble shoot.

Yes you are right, the hand sticks out a little, I can see it with cylinder open with a tug on the trigger.

I guess I don't want to mess with a brand new revolver, so I'll send it in. What a pain. I don't see how they could have test fired this gun without feeling the resistance.

I recently sent my son's model 442 to S&W for warranty work, it was repaired and returned in less than one month. Good luck.

The hand is the issue and since it is a new S&W firearm, you are best off to contact S&W for warranty service. It's unfortunate that issues with new firearms seem to occur so often, but I guess that's what happens when skilled tradesmen retire and are replaced by people who just assemble parts to make a firearm.

I'm going to send it for warranty. I own several s&w revolvers. This is the 3rd new one that never should have left the factory. A couple of others had sloppy polishing which I just lived with. It is great they have warranty, but it would be better if they would put in a teenie weenie bit more effort up front.

Does anyone think I might be having the same problem with my 625 and 25? The moon clips seem to be ok.

Haven't seen that before. Without seeing the gun, my first guess would be accumulated lead at the top of the recoil shield, just under the topstrap. Might see if it needs cleaning there.

Follow up

S&W promptly emailed me a fedex shipping label and said there is a 6 to 8 week turn around.

Got it back…

I got it back today, took about 5 weeks door to door, pretty fast, kudos to s&w. Judging from the invoice they went through it throughly, haven't shot it yet, but it feels good. Put the Altamont rosewood grips on. See photos.
